Nylon Stocking For Siphon Filter

hey everyone, I’ve been thinking about how to vacuum my fish waste up without having to dump the water.

My solution is to attach a nylon stocking to the end of the hose. Throw the hose in my sump with the stocking attached so that way I’m not siphoning out the water but am sucking up the gunk.

I’ve seen others use filter socks, stockings, or regular gym socks.

My only concern with using clothing items is leaching materials into the tank from the fabric.

If I buy new socks and rinse in tank water before use this will be adequate and safe?

Thanks!

I use pop sockets and have done for years with no side effects, I do rinse in tank water first

Nylon stockings should be safe, but if you're worried, you could also use an aquarium media bag. They're like a buck a piece at petsmart and hold up to rinsing out well, so you could reuse it.

Petsmarts farther than most stores for me so was looking for an easier option. I bought some dish rags at the grocery store that are a light weight material.

Next time I’m at Petsmart I’ll see about getting some filter socks.

Thanks for the input!

No problem! I just know some people prefer things made specifically for aquariums so they don't have to worry if it'll hurt anything. If you have a Petco or Pet Supplies Plus that's closer, they should sell them too (I just tend to default to Petsmart cause it's closest for me, lol). The dishrags should work well enough too. Honestly, there's lots of materials you can use for aquarium DIY projects. I work at a fabric store, and it's always fun when I run into fellow aquarium keepers buying stuff like the polyester batting and polyfil (two excellent alternatives to those overpriced HOB cartridges).

I’m definitely a diy type of person lol, and very thrifty. I’ll spend the money If need be tho.

Pre emotive text pop socks you call them thought you would have realised that we call them stockings

I got curious and Googled the usage. It's a British thing, looks like (I only figured out what you meant when I saw the pic you posted, so I could see why OP was confused too, lol). Here in the US I've heard them called stockings, hose, pantyhose and nylons, but pop socks is new to me. That sounds like a fun thing to call the pantyhose that come in those little clear balls that you pop open though.
