Not Just A Whisper!

Hey gang!

Anyone have the Tetra Whisper 60? I just upgraded to this filter... and well, its not whispering. Its loud.
I was running the Whisper 30 in my 26g and it was very quiet. You had to be right up on it to hear it.
But, I wanted more filtration so I upgraded to the 60... and I have to say, its really noisy.
Whats the deal... is it just mine, or does everyone have a noise issue with thiers?

I've got two of the Whisper 60s in my 55 gallon tank. One of them is older and pretty quiet, but my brand new one was REALLY loud at first. If you kinda fiddle with the nob on top that changes the speed that sometimes works. Or if you take the tube out in the middle and put it back in, sometime it can help. Mine have been running for about 6 weeks, and some days they are loud, sometimes they are really quiet.

I forgot to ask, is your tank full all the way? I've noticed if I don't fill it to the top, it makes a lot more noise w/ the water splashing, maybe this will help a little!

The impeller seems to rattle on my new whisper. I prefer aquaclear but teh whisper was cheaper.

mine does that sometimes too. sometimes if you pick it up and re-situate it, it will be a tad quieter. I guess that's what we get for buying the cheap ones

Yeah... the water level is fine... I actually like the trickle sound of water splashing, so I wish that was the problem, but its the loud humming-ish noise from the filter itself. Maybe it needs a good coating of biofilm before it quiets down... if not - its back to the lps for a newer quieter model. (I stayed with the tetra because I liked how quiet the 30 was and I wanted to use the bio-foam insert from my 30 to avoid a minI cycle... but it doesn't seem like that happened either.

- price isn't an object, convenience and easy of use is more so.

Then aquaclear is the one for you. I knew better and tried to save a couple of dollars, although it does a good job but is a bit noisy.

I like the fact that I can move around the sponge part to new tanks and that I only have to buy 1 type of replacement filters. That was until I bought a pengiun minI biowheel! (which I LOVE by the way) The whispers are loud sometimes but I've got enough in my living room (5 tanks) that there is always a constant hum. Not usually a problem until I try to sleep on the couch!

We currently have 3 tanks.
One is an Eclipse 6 gallon (fry tank) which has one type filter ((which is completely silent btw)).
The 26g (livebearer tank) which is the Whisper, is in a room that is in constant use, otherwise I wouldnt mind the hum, but its in the family room, which is in the really lived in part of the house, and sometimes you have to turn the tv up, which is even more annoying... and even better you can hear it from the kitchen and the staircase up
Then there is the newest 45g (everything else) has the Penguin 350 which has another size filter... its crazy...
... so, its kinda a problem and I'm kinda confused... some reviews says one thing about one type, then there is a contradictory review...
I was hoping you guys could give me some real-time lived in advice on quiet ones... Carol - do you have the aquaclear?

Each filter seems to have a life of it's own. This morning my husband was complaining about the loud filter.....When I went in to check, it had lost it's prime, and I'm lucky it hadn't burned out the motor! Poured water through it, and it got nice and quiet. Hope you can find one that suits you.

we have 5 whisper power filters, 3 different models from a 5-15 to a 30-60 along with 3 whisper filters in the 2.5g tanks.. our only tanks without whisper filters are the 2 5 gallon hex tanks and it's quiet in here with all those filters running.. the only noise I hear is the azoo palm filter on the mahachaI tank (only because the water isn't to the top). we've never had any problem with them being noisy.

How do you like the internal filters on the smaller tanks? Do you find they take up a lot of room? I was looking to get one and wasn't quite sure if they'd take up too much room or not.

I couldnt take it anymore, SO... today I replaced the Whisper60 with a Penguin 200. WOW, what a difference... so quiet... all but the sprinkle sound of water (I love that).

I have the same filter, it's great. I love that sound of water too. Only bad thing is the filter inserts, after awhile they slow the water down a lot so I just use a aquaclear sponge and bio-balls, and some filter floss.

I buy a tetra product that they make to fit marineland filters. Petdiscounters.com sells them. I like them because you can open it up and fill it with what you want or just add or remove carbon at will. I also like that its like having double floss because its a pocket. Check it out... They are having a sale on 'em now for a buck each! They are called Low-Cost Penguin Bio Cartridges.

hmm I'll check them out, always like putting different types of media in my filter, there's a fair amount of room in the penguin, thanks
