not fish related - but still a project

Well, my nephew is on his high school football team, and his mom (my sister) wants to "show team support". So, she asked me if I would make a stadium blanket (crocheted afghan) in the team colors - preferably showing the team logo. So. I went online to the school's web site and printed an 8 1/2 X 11 inch copy of the school's sports logo. Borrowed my nephew's uniform top to match the colors (dark blue and gold with white accent). Traced the logo onto some graph paper I had, and transferred the logo (square by square) onto a graph on Excel. Looked pretty good, so I started the afghan. It is coming along quite nicely (if I do say so myself). Of course, his first game is in 2 weeks. Don't think I'll get it done in time for that, but it's a bit too hot to be covered up with an afghan at the games right now. Hopefully I'll have it done be the time the weather is cool enough for them to use it. If nothing else, the playoffs (I'm thinking positive here) will be in January. Also, the same colors/logo apply to all the sports teams, and he may decide to play soccer after football season is over.

Cool! I took a crocheting class with a friend a few years ago, and it was fun.

It is actually not a difficult stitch - all half doubles. The awkward part is changing colors. Because the blue and yellow are such contrasting colors, I can't carry the yarn along the row. It also does not make sense to cut the yarn each time (some places have only one stitch before going back to the other color). That means that I get to have a big ole long yarn that gets pulled up through the stitch of the row below so that it is ready for the next row. I counted how many color changes in one of the rows and I think it was 15. That means 15 pieces of yarn strung out the top of the afghan...that I can't ball because then I can't pull the yarn through the stitches. I have it set up on a card table so the yarns don't get too tangled up...

Well, it is coming along. You can now see the bottom of the S on the left side. You can also see all the yarns coming off the row I'm working on. Every time I change from Blue to Yellow (and back again) there is a new yarn. This is not a project to take places!

I have reached the 1/3rd mark on the logo. You can see where the S is starting to curve back the other direction now. It's coming along...

I have reach the halfway point on the design! You can see where the S curves back around the center of the M making it stand out and look like a V. If you look close, you can see on the left hand side where the S is coming out from behind the center V.

Wow. I'm very impressed I can't even crochet even though I have tried many many times!

Looking good. My crochet is limited to what I need to finish edges and do details on my knitting, so that's pretty impressive!

Well, I have passed the 2/3rds mark and am closing fast on the 3/4 mark. It is really coming along. It takes me about 15 minutes to crochet one row - then another 30 minutes to pull the yarns through for the next row. I'll be glad when I'm done with the logo!

Well, I finished it. Had to sit in a waiting room at the dentist while Mom had her teeth cleaned, so I took it with me. It is now ALL DONE!!!!! Y E A H ! ! !

Yes, this was a monster afghan. My sister wanted it big enough to cover her, her husband, and their two youngest kids at the ball games. And, since we were on that side of town, we swung by my sister's and gave her the afghan. She was so excited to get it!

My nephew has a game this Friday, and if they win (when they win), they will get to go to Regionals. They are all so excited. I told my sister I wanted pictures of them using the blanket...

So, here are pictures of the whole process, start to finish.
