Normal Oscar reaction to feeding?

I don't know if my Oscar is playing smart for more food or he is really that excited to eat.
Recently, when I open the lid and about to put food in the tank, he will literally jump out of the air (his whole body) and snatch the pellet from my hand before it gets to the water. Although I think this is pretty cool, I want to ensure he isn't hurting himself or this is a normal reaction. My other oscar will wait until it hits the water, he will make a splash as well, but when he grabs the pellet he runs to the bottom of the tank where no one can see him eat it behind my ornaments. Is this a normal reaction? They are about 4-5 Inches now and eat about 4-5 Large HikarI Gold pellets each. I feed them twice a day.

Hi, I've had a few different fish act agressivly when feeding. Splash water and use their bodies to hit the food before snatching it. Only cool till you get really wet.

They sound happy. You just need to out wit them at dinner time, maybe more than one pellet at a time..

Hi: That sounds like typical Oscar behavior to me. I always think of them as being like a Labrador Retriever with gills---even the way they look at you when you eat in front of them-very guilt inducing. I am quite fond of them, obviously.---rick

Just a heads up, though very cool to watch. Been doing tons of research on these guys in anticipation of when I get mine.

If your O gets in the habit of jumping out for food, there's a lot of talk of people that mainly have those glass tops, finding their oscar on the floor. Jumped so hard it pushed off the glass lid. Most likely in an attempt to get a fly that landed on the glass.

They say just put some weight on your top if it's those glass type tops for when he gets older.

Still .. Totally cool that he's like yelling "Mine!" as he jumps Lol

I have a lid that's rather heavy when its sits. I doubt they can knock the lid off especially since its atleast 3 feet away from the water, but I have heard of some that jumped out

One of my Oscars, the 7" one, completely jumped out after food once, startled me. He landed on the floor. He has since waited until the food hits the water.
