Noisy Penguin brand HOB filter Help

I have an ancient Penguin brand HOB filter. It does a good job, but after cleaning the impeller once about 6-8 months ago it is super loud. It like bangs around and this noise makes it hard to sleep. I don't want to trash it but if it really can't be fixed then oh well. I can't buy a new impeller as the filter is so old they don't sell em' anymore lol

Do you know what model Penguin filter it is?

Is the impeller visibly damaged, and is it seated in the filter correctly?

The lid says it is a Penguin 170 Bio-Wheel. The impeller doesn't look damaged although it has been bent and put straight again. I think it is seated correctly as the way it goes in sets it in place if that makes sense

Which part of the impeller was bent? The blades, the rod, or something else? Also, could you describe the sound it makes in more detail? Is it a rattle?

Looking at the prices of a replacement impeller, it doesn't seem to worth the price considering a new Penguin 200 is the same price as an impeller.

the rod that connects the magnet thingy to the blades. The sound is like a banging and grinding like the blades are hitting the surrounding plastic housing

I agree, it seems like your impeller is unbalanced now.

Can't go wrong with an AquaClear. My QT tank is in my bedroom and the impeller occasionally rattles and drives me insane. Just a flick or a smack and it's back to normal Given the filter is running on original parts since 2005

It sounds like a good excuse to get an aquaclear. I have two non aquaclear filters that I’m currently running and unfortunately neither have given me enough excuse to ditch them for aquaclears.

well I suppose I'll have to buy an aquaclear lol. If Igor95 has had one since 2005 then its gotta have some quality in it.
