Geophagus surinamensis is endemic to Suriname. Tropical fish are not commercially exported from Suriname. If you think you have surinamensis.... you don't. You probably have brachybranchus, megasema or proximus.

Surinamensis are only available in the hobby when someone has been and caught some themselves, ie rarely.

The taxonomy of all fish seems to be a rapidly moving target these days, but especially those from C.A. and extreme NE S.A.. It is to the point that common names seem the more reliable indicator:).
I'm referring to cichlids, but perhaps it is true all across the board. Frustrating.----rick

They should go back to calling them all Cichlasoma, lol. We knew what was what then. :)
