NLS Pellets and Neon Tetras

HI all,

I've recently gotten the sinking 0.5mm NLS pellets to feed my neon tetras, guppies, platies, and corys. I've noticed that most of the fish seem to put the pellets in their mouths and then spit it out. Sometimes they stay in...

Is it because the pellets are too hard and dry? Should I soak the pellets for a while first?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ray

I fed my neons the smallest omega-one pellet that my LFS carries, not sure if they're .5 or 1mm but I'll find them and check... Anyway they did that a few times with each pellet and then would eat it once it was saturated. One of the bigger ones that was always gobbling the food super fast eventually choked to death on one. I could see it in his throat, I actually tried to get it out or push it down with a toothpick but I couldn't.

I only feed my neon tank with flake and frozen/live foods now because of that, but if that's what you'd like to give them I'd say to soak it in a cup of tank water for a minute or two then pour it in. I think neons are especially sensitive to issues involving dry food - even just when mine eat too much flake too fast, they go bobbing around the tank, head down tail up for the next hour or so until they digest because of the air in the dry flakes. Do be careful, and good luck. arty0009: betta arkie1 (I just figured out how to use those things lol!!)

Thank you for the response. I'm a bit surprised because I thought (and read) that the NLS pellets were great for the fish. And the container for these pellets specifically show neons too.

It's always trial and error with foods and it sometimes needs time for them to get used to it. Otherwise move onto something else.

I'm sticking a pinch of tetramin flakes to the glass for my neons to peck at.

They seem to love a tiny cube of freeze dried tubifex too. I press it onto the glass 6cm above the gravel as with the tetramin.

All the neons come out of the plants to nibble at the front glass and this looks great.

I give small thawed bloodworm too and they pick them out of the water column as they drift down.

They don't say the actual size but they're called micro pellets.

My neons also go crazy over frozen bloodworms, and frozen brine shrimp. They're much more comfortable eating from the water column than at the surface.
