Nitrites High...

image.jpg Crystal clear! Still have ammonia levels up there, but have been treating with Prime and Seed. Ammonia:1.0/Nitrite 2.0/Nitrates 10ppm. The last couple of days the nitrate levels have been steadily increasing. Been doing daily water changes, and today because the nitrite spiked, I added an extra dose of Prime to try and get it down. Any other suggestions to get this started party to its intended conclusion so I can begin to stock my tank?

You seem to be in mid cycle, it should be quick sailing from here on! Keep doing the water changes to keep the ammonia and nitrites below 4-5ppm. You do not need to feed ammonia source daily (assuming you are in fishless cycle).
Good luck... you are almost there, water changes at this part usually helps but only do so when ammonia / nitrites are higher than 4-5ppm and avoid massive water changes (>30%).

I would suggest getting a bottle of Stability to speed up the cycling process. Use as directed on the bottle. Good luck.

I’ve been using Seed from Aquavitro...isn’t it the same?

I'm not familiar with that product, although it's made by Seachem. I googled it and it refers to the maintenance of reefs in saltwater tanks. There is no mention of the product being used to cycle a tank. Maybe someone else is familiar with it and can chime in.

Actually, I've been looking it up myself, and this is what I found on another forum (with a google search...I didn't actually check out the forum). This is a reply from Seachem.

Thanks for the question. Sorry about the delay in answering; we have a new email system that seems to be filtering out our notifications from this forum.

mattinmd did a pretty good job describing the differences and I'll expand on that a little.

Stability was our only bacterial supplement for a long time. Great for using when starting up a new , adding new , doing a big water change, or any other time you might want to boost your . It contains a blend of nitrifying, denitrifying, and heterotrophic bacteria. Stability still works great, but their are some new strains of bacteria available now that weren't around when it was first developed, so we decided to produce a new blend which incorporated some of these new strains which work faster and are more resilient to changes in the . This new blend is Seed. As we develop improved updates on existing Seachem products, we release these new products as part of our Aquavitro line.

While looking at bacterial strains, there were some other blends that caught our eye. Pristine and Remediation were two blends that also gave great results in our experiments. Rather than being meant for starting a new tank (though they can be certainly be used in a new tank), these bacteria blends include strains that help break down built up waste that can accumulate in the , rocks, and ; so it is great for older or tanks with a high bioload. Pristine and Remediation are two different blends. The bacteria in Remediation works more aggressively; it was released as part of our Aquavitro line.
