Newest guppy addict...

Ok so I went into my LFS to see if my Celestial pearl danios had come in for the 10gal I had gotten ready. Well the owner was having issues finding a source he preferred for them. So I took a walk around the store and we chatted for a bit.

We started talking about the 10gal and what I wanted to do and such. Well we paused at the guppy tanks, he commented that he was happy to have found a good source finally for them and had just gotten a large order in. I told him that having to PACK 4 30 gal tanks isn't a large order, its gargantuan lol. Well I paused and looked at them, then he said come up front and take a look at a nano tank he did. Was what looked to be a 5gal cube or something like that with about 3 males and a bunch of plants and a small piece of driftwood. Yeah that's all I needed to see lol we walked in back and he set me up with one of the employees that I had met before and enjoyed talking with. So now there are 5 tiger guppies happily swimming around my 10gal newly planted tank, he's still looking for the CPD's but well....I think I may tell him to quit.

These fish are awesome!

Picks to come once the water calms down from the planting and gravel stir.

At one point, I had 25 strains of guppies here.
Looking forward to getting back to that many.

I currently have some females with the most beautiful tails, I am in the middle of a small breeding project trying to breed some male with equally pretty tails. All the stores around me have only had solid color males for about a year now. My favorite guppy has a tail that is kind of irrerdecent, it is pink on the top have and fades through a ranbow of color to purple on the bottom half. She's so pretty. I also have a femal with a pale blue tail that has dark blue spots on it her tail is as big or bigger than any male I have seen. I love my guppies!

Congratz. Just watch out for all the babies.

Babies won't be a problem, only have males in the tank lol.

Thanks guys, I really do like these guys!

I did lose one to unknown causes but the rest are doing ok so far. I think it was just unfortunate circumstances, I tend to notice that a lot of these common type fish can be a little weak but once they get a few days they seem to do better.

The others are quite active in the tank now and taking a bit to harassing my BN pleco lol for now he is putting up with it thou I don't think he will forever haha.

Ok well after a week away due to work I came home and the remaining tank mates look awesome!

I went back to the store and got credit for the two that I had lost as they and I had thought we might lose a couple. Love local stores! I added a few more tonight and they are looking much better than the original batch. Pics to come tomorrow with everyone so far in the tank.

ok here we go, I took a vid of the tank, please forgive the tinny music as it was my computer monitor playing music as I don't have my good computer speakers at the moment.

In the tank are 6 Male guppies (labeled as tigers) 2 Neons and 1 Albino BN pleco, I can tell you he is most likely hiding behind the filter lol its his safe spot.

The guppy at the very beginning is my fav of the tank, he is the only one that has black edging around his pectoral fins. Looks really cool when he is swimming around. Sorry it didn't come out so good in the vid.

Looks like a great tank. Did you get the guppies all together at once? I couldn't see, but what substrate do you have?

the guppies are all from the same shipment but a week apart in the tank. The first batch had just suffered a huge pH swing at my local store. The owner told me that he thought they would be ok but would take care of things if anything happened. Only lost 3 from that batch which was surprising, seeing as the tank pH at the store got down to below 6 and my tank is usually around 7.2 with the driftwood. They fixed the problem and the replacements are doing great now. Should color up nicely in the next few days. The two really black and green ones are the older two. The 4 kinda missing a bit of color are the new ones this weekend.

The substrate is just petco brand black gravel (which may get changed out for eco complete later on down the road, planting in gravel stinks for small plants)

Some of them are a kind of tuxedo guppy including the one at the start (guppies that have half black bodies), very stunning fish! they have gorgeous tails and look very healthy.

Thanks! I don't think the bodies are truly half black, I looked at them this morning and they have a decent amount of color in that black on their back half of the body. But hey if they are over dressed guppies so be it lol. They seem quite happy and healthy (and a bit fat as I kinda spoil them lol)

I never know that they were such interactive fish. I'm used to my fish paying a little bit of attention when its feeding time or when I'm around the tank, but these guys are always watching and coming to the side of the tank I'm near and begging for more food lol. Its also fun to watch the males dance with each other in the water.

ok good, i'm happy now that I got to see your wonderful gupps. they're very pretty....so is the tank. I like the wood and plants, and the lighting too what size is this again? 10? is it at your office?

yeah its a 10gal, and its actually my "home office" if you will.

The plants still need some work and Id like to add a few more but then again its an addiction as well haha.

The lighting is actually just a CFL bulb in a desk lamp lol. I have a T5HO fixture for the tank but I'm still working on a mounting system for it as its a 24inch unit and won't sit nicely on top of the tank with the way I have things.

what 'color' is the cfl? the 'daylight', or just regular? yeah a 24 inch light might be hard to work with...you could sit it on top...but it would hang over the ends haha.

yeah plants are kind of addicting what all do you have? looks like anubias for sure. well it def works...looks very zenish

Its just a regular 2700K 14watt (60watt equivalent) light.

In the tank now are some mellon swords, some other generic sword that I thought was amazon sword but I dunno lol, some assorted anubias, a java fern, some dwarf sword, some rosette sword, and a moss ball.

I keep thinking about trying a couple crypts in there as well but for now I want to get the tank up to better plant standards, they are all kinda throwing a fit right now and melting quite a bit.

I hate when they throw a fit haha. and crypts throw the biggest one of all. >.< are most of your plants pretty new then?

yeah just got most of them in the mail the other week, so a lot are still adjusting to things.

I've been addicted to plants lately as well. Just when I thought I was over my addiction of looking at fish every week... haha. Do your 2700K lights work well? I use CFL's as well but I had to get the 6500K daylight bulbs to accommodate my plants.

I will most likely be having to upgrade, this was just what was on hand for lighting at the moment. I'm trying to build a stand for a single bulb T5HO light that I have, its gonna take me a bit as it is a 24inch fixture that I'm trying to put over a 20 inch tank, and with the filter where it is it makes it difficult.

Hmm well good luck with that. I will be sticking with mine for a while haha.

Oh I may end up just getting a new bulb and calling it good for a while, we will see how the designing goes lol. I don't have a lot of time on the weekends to mess with it right now so the bulb may win by default.

I personally think that getting the 'daylight' cfl will help your plants a lot more. they tend to do a lot better with this spectrum. =]

Ill probably be getting one this weekend as I don't have time to work on a stand this weekend
