So ive had goldfish as a kid. Now about 3 years ago my son won a goldfish from the fair. Two years ago he won a second. The fish lived in harmony through various tanks until a few months ago when the larger older fish began to bite the smaller one. I rushed out and got a much bigger tank and planed to take the smaller fish and put it into the new tank where I could watch its recovery. I intended to do a cycle but after witnessing the attack I panicked and put the smaller fish in with one of our snails (thinking a snail would help with the cycle in some way idk why I assumed that)
about two weeks went by and I lost the fish and the snail. I was quite heartbroken to be honest. After coming home to find them we said our goodbyes and I cleaned the tankwith bleach rocks plants everything as some sort of white fungus or algae was growing on some decor. I rinsed very thoroughly. Now I have re set up the tank an am going on roughly week two of the cycle. maybe you'll consider it week 1 because I just did a 75 percent water change when after the first week no nitrate was present. In this tank I am using plants too as I've heard it can benefit the cycle. Now after my water change the next day using my apI freshwater master kit nitrites and nitrates began to show (my thought is maybe there was bleach left on the decor and the water change removed or diluted it enough to allow new growth) today the ammonia was testing a little over 1.ppm according to the kit so placed some rivershrimp in an empty filter bag and placed it in the tank to float around and uses a twist tie off a bread container to keep it closed as I've read old food could be why that algae appeared last time. Should I continue water changes or do I generaly just let it do its thing. I just don't want to lose this fish or any of our 2 remaining snails this is my tank below. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
I should also mention this time around I will be doing a fishless cycle
a few more shots some plants are thriving while others are not I'm unsure weather to imdetatly remove or allow them in to see what happens my thought is worst case the plant dies and some more ammonia is released before I remove it
