Hello Everyone, i'm new to the snail world and about a year into aquaria and keeping fishies... diving in head first for sure..... even starting a fishroom.

I hope this is the right place for this posting, if not please move to correct location. tanks

Anyways, I have been hearing a lot about MTS and just discovered it meant ( Malaysian trumpet Snails). I read a bit on some forums and a bit online. Wondering if someone could give me some good/bad information about them based on experience or information on the internet.

Also have these questions about them,
1. How big do they get?

2. Will cichlids like peacocks and pleco's like ABN's eat them?

3. I heard they are great for breaking up surface like (, left over food and so forth)?

4. Is it true they burrow into the substrate by day and mostly come out at night? If so,,, Should your substate be a certain depth to accomodate them?

5. Do they bother plants much,,, I heard they don't provided there is some sort of leftover food, plants kind of as a last resort?

6. Also heard they can multiply very quickly if feeding to high and will stay controlled if not overfeeding?

7. ANYONE in ONTARIO, within an hour of TORONTO, MOSTLY EAST have any they can give away or sell for very cheap?

Well that's all I can think of for now? IF there is any real negative aspects to them please say so as well......
Appreciate EVERYONES time....
thank-you

1. How big do they get?
My biggest is around an inch, maybe a bit larger. Hard to know for sure... as your fourth question mentions, they're more or less unseen during the day.

2. Will cichlids like peacocks and pleco's like ABN's eat them?
I'm not aware of any fish that would eat them... even loaches (who love snails) leave them alone from what I understand, though I've not tried the combination personally.

3. I heard they are great for breaking up service like (, left over food and so forth)?
They will eat leftover food.

4. Is it true they burrow into the substate by day and mostly come out at night?
This is true.

5. Do they bother plants much,,, I heard they don't provided there is some soft of leftover food, plants kind of as a last resort?
I have plants, and have not had any snail-related damage.

6. Also heard they can multiply very quickly if feeding to high and will stay controlled if not overfeeding?
This is true.

I agree with all of the above answers. However, crayfish eat MTS.

I think there're no fish which can eat MTS. Their shells are really hard! I tried to break one with my hands one time and couldn't do it. Well perhaps it's because I'm too thin, but try it yourself if you don't care to kill one.

I wouldn't recommend them as food for a crayfish, but they sure enjoy digging through the sand looking for them.

My MTS are often out during the day crawling around and doing whatever it is that snails do. I can't say I see more MTS at night than I do during the day either. I got them to stir up my substrate but I'm starting to doubt their work ethic.

Really,,,, didn't know they were tough lil buggers like that, but I guess that's their method of defence.
