New to Oscars

Well I have been thinking of asking my LFS if I could trade my Blood Parrots for an Oscar or two. Long story short since my LFS knows me very well he and I came up with a deal I could not refuse. I now have two Oscars. One is a Red Oscar and the other is a Tiger Oscar. Tiger is about 6 months old and my wife and I named him/her Mozart, or Mozzy for short. The Red Oscar we named Beethoven.

I tried for several months to get the Blood Parrots used to me but it did not work out. And so far this evening the Oscars are very inquisitive about our family.

Matter of fact they are watching me type this out right now.

Oscars are awesome, but your going to need a bigger tank for both of them I would say for bare mininum a 90 gallon for both. But I would recommend going bigger 110,125 gallons with heavy filtration.

Understand. Just have to do it in stages. My 26 has a Aqueon 55/75 filter. It circulates the tank at 15.3 times per hour right now.

On my 55 I need to do a leak check since I resealed the 20 year old tank. Hopefully by Friday I will be moving them into that tank.

So you going to have them in separate tank one in a 26 and one a 55gallon. If understanded correctly. Oscars are fast growers they will outgrow your tanks in months. And if you want them to live together in the future I will house them together in there permanent home(a bigger tank). So you have less problems with aggression in the future if they live together since they were young.

Hi, I have an Oscar and blood parrots-not in the same tank of course. Sorry the BP's didn't work out!

If it were me, I would try to find an even bigger tank, bigger even then the 55g. I have a 90g and it houses my Tiger Oscar and a Jack Dempsey. That Oscar just grows and grows and grows! He is about 7 and a half inches already and I have only had him for about 4 months.
How big is your new Oscar-if he is six months, he must be a pretty good size already?
Also, Oscars are funny fish, the quicker you can get those two in the same tank and keep them in it, the better the odds are that they can cohabitate together! I have read that some even after spending time together will still turn on each other. Just be aware of that-my plan is if I start to see aggression from the Jack and Oscar, one will be moved to a different tank! Good luck and glad you were able to find something that fit you better!

A friend of my dad had two tiger oscars in 110 gallon since they were like 4 inches. I went to see them 3 month ago one was like 12 inches and the other was 10. They were living with a common pleco. I went again a month ago saw there was an oscar missing the one that was ten inches. He told me that the other one killed him. The funny thing is that if he bother the pleco he "slaps" him with his tail. Oscar can turn on each other anytime so keep an eye on them.

Wow, that is some good information that LeoDiaz gave and really important in deciding how to keep your new Oscars. I may go ahead and separate mine-I have thought of it already!

My friend dads is still going to put a new tank mate. He has been growing out a really aggressive jack Dempsey that killed tow 4 in rainbow fish when he was only 2 inches. Now he is 8 inches and he is going to put in with oscar if hiding do already ima see how that works outs(RIP oscar). I told him not to do it but he is still going to do it.

In my opinion, even a 75 gal is still too small for a single full grown oscar

Well I bought what I had been told was a 150 gallon but it is a 120 gallon tank the other day, need to get a friend of mine to help me move it into the house. Also have to finish removing the old seal and reseal it.

Will be making self cleaning under gravel jet system to help move all the detritus to one side of the tank for the filter intake to pick up. May look into a home made filter unit with a catch tray that can be dumped each day, that would help make the tank much cleaner.
