New tank cycle - ammonia levels not rising.

Hey everyone,

Getting a 30G set up. Going to be moving from my 10G tank.
I am cycling it fishless. Currently has been going for about a week and a half. Has sand substrate in it and I put some of the substrate from the 10G in a mesh bag into the tank.
Also have put put some bio booster / API quickstart in.
But ammonia isn't rising.

Tips? Advice? Am I just being impatient?

Thank you all!

With a fishless cycle you need to provide an ammonia source. Ie. bottled ammonia, fish food, or a raw shrimp. Please research on how to do a fishless cycle.

Fish food takes time to break down so it maybe just that it hasnt yet.

I have been adding fish food but I haven't added ammonia itself.
I was just cautious about it but I guess I shouldn't be!

You don't need to add ammonia if you're using fish food - that breaks down into ammonia.

How much are you using? A few flakes or a pinch or two isn't enough. Add a handful to the foot of a pair of rights or stocking, tie it into a knot, and suspend it in the water. Leave it for a day or so, then check.

If you're going to do a fish-in-tank cycle, you add them as soon as you want to start the cycle, but you'll need to carry out daily water changes to keep ammonia to a minimum. Priority shifts to the fish's wellbeing.

If you can pick up a bottle of ammonia and work out the dose it is much cleaner than food.

Is your 10 gallon tank cycled? Are you planning on moving your fish over to the 30 gallon tank and breaking down the 10 gallon? If you answer yes to these 2 questions you don't have to go through the long drawn out fishless cycle. You can just move the fish and cycle over to the 30 gallon tank.

When I cycled my tank with fish food (ammonia is hard to find in Canada) I shoved about half a container of dollarama fish flakes in a stocking and tied it off and let it float for a few days. Things may start to get gross, but that should be when the ammonia shows up
