New surprise

So this morning I go to check on my pregnant guppy, Suki, and come to find out, she dropped some fry. I have counted a total of 5 so far. She may have dropped more and ate them, but who knows. She still looks pregnant. Her gravid spot is still really dark and she is boxy still. Does this mean she's going to drop more? And as for the ones that she's dropped, what are so good care tips for new fry? I want them to do really well, so what should I do as far as feeding and keeping them safe and healthy??

is your tank planted? have substrate they can hide in?

I don't do much for mine and they all do very well. my tank is planted and has rocks with room for the fry to hide in between the rocks. my babies go to the bottom and hide in the rocks, a few days later they are all free swimming and happy. I crush up fish food for them to eat until they start to be able to go after the bigger pieces in the tank.

I have a nursery tank where I put my mommas when they start to look boxy, they drop fry and I remove the momma- back to the main tank she goes! within a couple months they are big enough to go to my LFS. I keep those that are unique or have a trait I want in my future clutches

Yes, the tank is planted. There's plenty of hiding places and so forth for them. Just wasn't sure if there was more I should do.

not really. just let them come out of hiding. you see 5, there is probably more. my platys had average of 15 first birth, and my guppies have average 17 on first birth. then they have more on subsequent births.

do you have a male in the tank?

Oh okay. Well, I hope there's more. Lol. No. There's only the mother and new born fry in a 15 gallon tank. No other fish. I don't know if this is her first drop, but I don't think so.

ok. she can continue to have babies for at least 6 months after her last *ahem* interaction with a male. so be prepared for a ton of babies. also, she WILL breed with her offspring if they reach maturity in the tank with her. as will the sibling fish, so have a plan to prevent that. inbreeding causes a host of issues in fry a generation or 2 down the line

Okay, thank you for the heads up. I will separate the males and females as soon as I'm able to tell the difference. I don't need all those babies

My Lfs takes fry. Just call them before and ask them and they might take them. If not, it's always an excuse for more tanks! *wink*

Lol I do want more tanks. Right now I have 2 that are fairly small. And I want a big one, about 40 to 50 gallons. Lol but I'm surpressing my desire for one right now. I have to prioritize. but another fish tank is soon to come. Lol
