New Scales? What Do They Look Like

Hey everyone. I have been trying to find something on the internet for over a week now, and I figured it's probably better to just ask and get opinions.

So a little backstory: A few weeks ago my half moon double tail baby's fin rot started advancing. I, of course, did the PWC daily, keep tank pristine route but overnight it advanced and he lost most of his dorsal fin in hours! Today, I just finished my third and final treatment of Kanaplex mixed with JFC. It has halted his fin rot, and he is on his road to recovery. He is currently floating in a small hospital tank within his 10 gallon, heated (to 80 degrees), filtered aquarium. I've had him 6 months, and his tank is fully cycled. Current readings are 0/0/5. I am done with the medicine for now, but I am still treating his tank with a double dose of Stress Guard by Seachem daily, along with Vitachem.

On to the question: Since he lost most of his dorsal fin, and part of his other fins, along with some of his scales, is what I am showing in the below pictures scale regrowth? It does not look fuzzy, or infected, or irritated whatsoever. It's just grey patches where his iridescent blue scales use to be. He also has black stripes which look like body/no scales. For the life of me, I cannot find pictures anywhere that show in detail what new scales will look like as they grow. I know that his fins are growing back because they are clear at the tips, but the scales are super puzzling.

Any advice/opinions would be great!

Thanks!

I don’t have a clue now that you mention new scale growth. I have an 8” goldy that likes to fit his fat head into places it dosen’t fit and he’s lost a couple scales over the months. They just... appear? I’d think it would be like a fingernail that just slowly emerges as the right color. I’m gonna have to pay attention next time he knocks one off.

It seriously is a mystery of the ages lol As much as our fish are injury prone and lose scales I can't seem to find anyone documenting scale regrowth and what it looks like! The mystery continues

Scales and fins normally come in as a greyish color and then build the layers of color back up. This process is similar to what they go through as fry, changing from clear to a vibrant color. From what I can see he has some regrowth and no longer has fin rot.

Skye,

That's exactly what I was hoping to hear! I have other bettas, but I've been lucky that none of them have ever been sick with anything so this entire process has been a huge learning experience. I know that once they lose fins/scales they might not come back as before, but I am just glad someone is seeing that he is healing. He's the strongest fish I've ever had, hands down. Thank You!
