new rescue kitten

I know this is an aquatic forum first and foremost
however
I recently rescued another kitten (my first i've had for going on 10 years)

the new guy has been hiding for two days.
the only trace I have of him is poop and pee.
he's really scared and I get that but I want to make sure he's ok and for the life of me I cannot track him down.

any ideas on how to deal with this would be greatly appreciated. I just want him to be comfortable, and make sure he is eating and drinking. if he's using the bathroom he must be but still.
thank you

A couple of questions. Is this a street cat? Did you take it to a vet and have it tested for feline distemper, worms, feline leukemia etc. before exposing your other cat to it? Is your other cat up to date on its vaccinations?

Start by doing a room by room clear and close. Enter each room and close all windows and doors. start at one end and work to the other. Moving all furniture and anything that is not bolted down. Check all dresser drawers and the like. After clearing the room securely close the door and move on to the next room.
As for catching the new cat, a kennel with food and a litter box that is covered with a blanket would be a dark, warm and inviting place for the kitten. How old is the kitten?

ok so the kitten is 4 months old, I got him from a lady who does catch and release (catches strays or donated kittens, fixes, inoculates, finds homes) so I did not personally bring the kitten to a vet but he has been to one.
my other cat is up to date on her vaccinations.
I left a separate litter box out for the new guy and he is using it. I will try out the clear and close after work today. thank you for the suggestion.

We adopted a cat from the shelter when she was 6yrs old . she had belonged to a young man who could not keep her any more ,gave her to his mother who turned her into the shelter as she had too many of her own. She was in the shelter for 9 months when we took our dog to the shelter to pick out a cat and he chose her .we bought her home and put her in the spare bedroom with a litter box food and water. and a gate in front of the door to keep the dog out of the litter box. She hid for days and it took her a month before she finally came all the way out to the living room. Now she's all over the house and we have had her for a couple of years. She is one of the best cats we have ever had. When anyone comes to visit she still beats feet and hides. She is an indoor cat only, and the one time she got out. she followed my husband out the lanI door and my heart sank. He opened the door and she ran right back in again. It was like she was really scared when she realized she was on the wrong side of the screen. My guess is that she was always an inside florida cat and likes the lanI only. Give your kitty time he or she will come around. Alison

thank you.
its nice to hear that a couple like you and your husband saved a cat. it breaks my heart seeing strays of any kind.
I don't want to rush anything I just want the cat to be comfortable. I am pretty sure this one was a stray. my first cat was also a stray but I found her when she was the size of my palm. took her a while too. i've had her almost a decade and whenever it rains she looks for me or hides (found her in the rain) nor will she go outside. these poor creatures get traumatized.

Where I live I personally would not allow a cat outside on purpose . At the back of our yard is a golf course with a water retention type feature that is the length of a football field or longer and about 50 feet across. The water is also connected to a pond via an underground tunnel. periodically Fluffy the alligator comes through to visit for a day or two and check out what's for dinner and neither my dogs or my cat are on the menu. Plus there are poisonous snakes out there such as cottommouths. They go out on a leash or not at all. Alison

aliray makes a good point.

All of our little ones are rescues. The latest one a little female we named Squeekers was rescued by Sunhawk in a blizzard. She took close to two years to warm up to everyone (2 dogs, a cat, Sunhawk and I) After two years she seems to have chosen me as her buddy

She has moved into the lead cat spot. Bandit is 14 years old and seems to be quite taken with Miss Squeekers.

Give the little one time he will come around.

well the good news is I finally have him contained with his own food water and litter . my first cat seems to have gotten into a little spat with him, I am guessing either because he might have tried to eat from her dish or maybe because she's just used to being solitary.

maybe ill slowly introduce them again sometime in the future but for now I am going to sleep in the same room as the little one, try to let him get to know me without getting up in his business.

thanks for all the help and support

Good news indeed

Cats (like dogs) will establish a pecking order. The odds are that in time the two of them will get along.

First, congrats on the new baby! In all the years I have taken in, fostered and rehomed cats I have learned that all cats seem to hate each other at first, no matter what. (I had one exception. He passed a few years ago and I miss him terribly!)

I usually start a new cat in the laundry room (any spare will do) and let them get used to the sounds and smells of the house, with all of us humans visiting frequently. How long they stay in there depends on how scared the cat is. My "exception" cat spent less than a 1/2 hour before demanding out. lol My trapped feral spent 3 weeks (and I took a whole different approach) but is now the most affectionate cat in the house.

He will come around eventually and your resident kitty will too.

thank you amydeb.
a little update the kitten is getting bolder, in the room. comes out for food will eat from my hand, doesn't always dart away after I enter the room.
however he is kind of jumpy around me. I try not to approach him directly and just lounge in the room with him in there. it will take some time.

looking forward to being able to update with some pics
