I decided to get my first lizard it's a crested gecko. And might I say it's adorable. My last aquarium I set up was a Cory/shrimp tank then I started reading up on reptiles. I fell in love with leopard geckos n crested geckos choosing crested gecko due to my home humidity kinda of like choosing Hardy fish due to my water quality at home. I'm sorry for the change in subject bc I know this is a fish site but I can't find any reptile sites maybe we can add a section for reptiles bc I know at least one fish Keeper has a reptile or knowledge on them!
Meet haku he was bought two days ago from PetSmart and was tailless wen I bought him as u can see. I got him knowing he was tailless I thought it was irrelevant if the guy had a tail or not bc the tail doesn't make the lizard! I would love to know if anyone knows the morph of this crested gecko is if anyone can tell id also love any feed back on favorite powdered foods that they may enjoy maybe treats how to bond with these guys any info anyone experienced may have. Right now tank is 10 gal tall will be upgraded to a 38×38 exo or 55 gal long tank fliped on it's side whatever is convenient at the time wen it's big enough right now it's a baby

He is a partial pinstripe harlequin What that means is he has almost a full pinstripe down his dorsal, and the harlequin means he has patterning on his sides and feet. Super great looking gecko to find at a commercial pet store like that!

If you have any questions or concerns about care feel free to ask! I keep and breed crested geckos, right now I have about 20 under my care.

You're a life saver thank u I also thought this gecko was very gorgeous myself and had been reading lots about morphs I too was thinking he looked to have Harley in him. n this picture my guy was fired up I believe lol I learned that there colors get more darker wen they're fired up in the morning he is more a soft brown this was evening. Right now haku is a tiny baby and in a 10 gal tall terrarium Christmas time if he grows a bit I'll upgraded to a 38×38. What food do you think they prefer right now it's eating PetSmart tropical real fruit crested gecko diet everyone say order rapashy i've got the gecko to eat off my finger the day I first got it but it seems the past two days my gecko isn't interested in the food. Is this normal do they just eat wen they chose or due to them being nocturnal is there just a chance I'm not seeing him eat yet? My humidity throw out the day rounds at 75 reaching a 100 at night is this fine? Will handling it every single day as a baby cause stress or a bond ? N lastly do any of yr geckos get fresh fruit treats is this safe I've read about giving them mushed fig as a monthly treat ?

Crested geckos actually are not nocturnal as previously believed! They’re considered “crepuscular,” meaning they’re mostly active during sun down and sunrise (twilight hours). It’s normal for them not to eat for the first few days of being in a new enclosure. I personally haven’t had a good feeding response with Repashy, none of my geckos seem to care for it. I use Pangea! There are many different flavors but the Insects one seems to be all of their favorites. You won’t find it in stores though so you’ll probably need to order it online. I personally wouldn’t use any other brand for food other than Pangea and Repashy as they’ve been making this food for many years and it’s perfectly formulated for crested geckos. A lot of the other ones you find at Petco/PetSmart are super high in sugars and fillers which aren’t good. Offer your gecko two food dishes (you can literally use bottle caps as food dishes, just wash them really well) for now so he can adjust and find it easier Treats are also okay occasionally but I wouldn’t do it too too often. They kind of get addicted to sugar hahah. Sometimes I’ll mash a banana up with their food and they seem to love that. As for handling I wouldn’t handle him for the first week or so just so he can get settled in and feel comfortable. Some geckos are totally fine being handled while others simply will not tolerate it, you just have to learn how to read them. If he pushes his body in to your hand, like he flattens himself out, he’s stressed out and should be put back in the tank.

Thank you for taking time to offer your knowledge very helpful. I'm gonna add Another food ledge so he can find the food easier like u suggested. Very good point PetSmart had him in a significantly smaller enclosure so the space upgrade could make it hard for him to find food. I'm gonna order pangea fig/ insect mix from Amazon fingers crossed he likes that it has good comments. I childishly started handling him immediately probably a dumb idea it's so cute tiny and I was excited... so far he has not flattened hisself out I handle him by the enclosure. He just jumps hand to hand. When I got him his colors where lighter colored now theyre darker. Could these darker colors b good or mean stress. Or is it just possible wen I bought him he was fired down n now wen I see him it's wen I get home around sun down 5pm 6pm so I see him darker bc he is simply active and awake being a normal fired up crepuscular creature. I'll attach a photo of the difference in colors. Do you think that its good or bad he has gotten darker? I'm reading mixed reviews online n some say they can be pale wen they're dehydrated some say they're pale wen fired down (sleep) and dark wen fired up (awake) some say darker color can mean stress I'm kinda confused... Wen I got the crested gecko I researched a long time just like I did wen I started aquarium keeping. N I'm a firm believer that even after researching once u get the particular cute creature there is so much more to learn lol the best knowledge is self taught. Lucky for me there is fish lore and helpful ppl with that self taught knowledge .

Very cool setup! Lucky gecko.

Them not being nocturnal is very good to point out. Many including myself have been unaware in the past. Mine show no interest in repashy. Their favorite is Pangea fig snd insect. Tried zoomed they didn’t like it.

He looks perfectly fine! When it’s more humid they’ll fire up and their colors will appear darker, when it’s a bit drier they’ll fire down and look more dull. Sometimes they will fire up when they’re stressed but that usually happens when they’re around another gecko. They’ll also look grey and chalky whenever they’re about to shed. I forgot you asked about humidity, 70-100% is a bit high, what are you using to guage that reading because sometimes hygrometers are off? You want your enclosure to dry out before you spray it down again, but the gecko does need to be able to drink so spray the glass and leaves while avoiding your substrate until it dries a good bit. It’s a bit harder to tell if a gecko without a tail is dehydrated because their tails will get kinky and wiggly looking. But just from the pictures I can tell he’s not dehydrated, he’s all filled out and you can’t see any ribs and what not

And Gamer I've been breeding them for nearly 6 years and I learned this year they weren’t nocturnal hahaha. Just goes to show you never know everything and the hobby is always changing information!

Thank you for all your info. Haku is In a 10 gal aquarium I flipped vertical n made plastic fitted lid to hold in humidity for now he will get a 38×38 wen he grows larger then my pinky lol. I figured that the plastic lid was holding in way to much humidity even with the vent holes so I bought a 10 gal screen lid with lid clips from Walmart yesterday. This morning my humidity was at 51 I use a digital hydrometer/thermometer. I read yr reply on humidity and am glad I switched to the screen lid yesterday my humidity went down and haku was pale. I misted hakus tank this morning on the glass and leaves bringing the humidity up to 60 tonight I'll give him another good mist to bring his humidity in the 70s. I'm excited tonight my fig and insect pangea gets here's n I'm gonna see how haku likes it. Thanks again for all yr time my very last question is I use distilled water for misting to prevent hard water stains. I read that this lacks minerals that a gecko needs. Should I op for bottled water or spring water something with minerals or distilled is fine and minerals in water irrelevant for created geckos?

I would use spring water, yes but I personally just use tap water that I’ve conditioned. The hard water stains do build up but I’ve found it does that no matter what water I use so I just use the rough side of a sponge to wipe it off and then dry it with a paper towel.

Heck yeah I was using distilled water but I know it lacks minerals I only used distilled to prevent calcium stains But that's less important then making sure haku gets good minerals I'll be getting some sting water or using my fish tank water lol bc it's dechlorinated with prime n I heard someone say u can use fish water for them As long as u don't use dechlorinator with added slime coat

This little baby has been at my work for the past few weeks. If he’s still there when I get paid he’s coming home with me.
