Illness & Symptoms
How long have you had this fish? Just got yesterday

How long ago did you first notice these symptoms? Yesterday so preexisting

In a few words, can you explain the symptoms? Fish seems fine more timid than others ate last night hides a bit more and is usually last to join group hanging out in open and first to run but expected for new fish. Noticed bump on tail, it is like one side slightly concave other convex or like the tail was popped out. Tried to get pics couldn't really capture it circled area will try to get another pick when feeding tonight.

Have you started any treatment for the illness?
Not sure it is illness, side note I did get a few more harlaquin rasboras last week and one ended up with a fungus that looked like back fins white and clamped, currently in med tank getting treated looks better also treating platys moving to 30 gallon tank they were occasionally flashing but otherwise seemed fine decided to treat as well since using meds and know flashing typically sign of sickness all other fish in main tank fine. Unfortunately can't use med tank right now. And couldn't quarantine I sort of impulse bought the pearls been planning my tank for them to be centerpiece but wasn't quite ready to add but fish store randomly had them in and I was too excited to wait.

Was your fish physically ill or injured upon purchase? It looked like this at purchase Unfortunately only had three females and I wanted 1 male to 3 females so wasn't able to pick healthiest only what they had again bit impulsive but really excited for these fish. Lfs is a good one super knowledgeable

How has its behavior and appearance changed, if at all? No change still early just thought I would throw this out if just deformity and fish otherwise healthy won't worry just not super familiar with gourami to know what to look for.

Explain your emergency situation in detail. (Please give a clear explanation of what is going on, include details from the beginning of the illness leading up to now)

I just got 4 pearl gourami, all seem healthy one has strange tail bump but seems healthy just a bit more timid than others. Not sure if dealing with illness or birth defect. Wanted 1 male 3 females only three females available so took what they had not necessarily healthiest fish but really like lfs so usually trust stock. Fish hiding a bit come out when not in room seems typically new to tank behavior. See above on notes about previous sick fish not related to this but wondering if should be concerned about other fish getting sick. Attached photos pic with three up top show other three the one in question joined group shortly after but couldn't get a good pic without scaring away

I’m having a hard time seeing any bump? They look healthy to me. Glad it’s eating. I just got 2 pearls last week and it took them a couple of days to warm up each at its own pace. The one still occasionally chills in the floating plants. Now they are just like my betta begging all the time. How big are they? Mine are about 2.5” and I’m still having a hard time determining sex! Maybe someone else will have a better idea for you.

Thanks yea sorry couldn't really get pic of otherside with bump so hard to get pics. They seem healthy about 2.5 as well pretty small. Lfs workers are pretty great at determining sex so trusted then as I am still learning managed to pick out my mail platty before it matured fully I was super impressed. Really love these fish so far they are super cool and relaxing to watch. One is pretty brave always hanging front and center I really love their little feelers. Just wanted to see if anyone else has ever seen this in fish before or if I need to be concerned. Currently just watching carefully seeing if things/behavior changes at all.

My LFS has them in stock every time I have been there. They said they were too young to determine sex so I tried my best thought I picked two females, but I’m pretty sure my one is turning out to be male. I am going to get two more if I can ever get big enough to make sure they are female. I love mine the one is a bit nippy after feeding but other than that they are doing ok together. I got two honeys the same day for a different tank and they are very handsy with their feelers. The pearls are such pretty fish! I hope everything turns out ok with that one.

First thought looking at pictures was mycobacteriosis, aka fish TB - bent spine, head lesion (resembles HITH except this looks like a larger erupted TB abscess), both typical of mycobacteriosis.

I do have to admit I spotted this post right as I was about to go to bed so I did not read through your whole post and I may be missing context and/or important questions of yours. Just wanted to give you some kind of direction since other people haven't jumped in yet (and I hope they do in case they have a different idea). The gist of mycobacteriosis is quarantine quarantine quarantine, there is no treatment if that is what it is, but UV sterilizers can manage the disease to keep it from re-infecting fish.

I will be back on in the following days though I can't guarantee I'll be any better help!

Thank you for the response, tb was my first worry but as of now fish is acting healthy and normal and eating it looked like this when I bought it and fish were new . The head thing worries me but it is hard to notice and looks like a discoloration, when looked in certain light looks like a dent in head but doesn't look like open sore or hole. I will work to shuffle things around and get fish quarantine just want to make sure it is sick since tank has lots of hiding spots hard to get fish out and don't want to unnecessary stress the fish and end up with more illness. How screwed am I for rest of fish if tb? Any advice would be greatly appreciated love my fish would crush me to lose them. Uploaded another pic and gif of fish during feeding.

Personally I think the fish acts too healthy to be in a certain stage of fish tb.
It doesn't show the most common signs of that. Also the fact that the other fish don't show any signs make.me think it is a different thing.

That is great to hear, what is typically recommended in this type of situation, should I just hang out keep close eye see if anything changes or quarantine that one to be safe? It seems happy and healthy in planted tank with friends really don't want to stick in bare hospital tank with a few fake plants unless necessary. I am working on my patience in this hobby I feel like I fuss and rush to fix things which stresses fish more and makes more problems but want to make sure other fish ok. So much to learn in this hobby really appreciate the advice here.

I'd leave it indeed and keep a close eye on things. When things worsen I'd act.
