New Koi Betta

Hey guys! Just thought I would share pictures of my new betta! I'm slightly obsessed with koi bettas. He is in a 3 gallon tank until I move some baby guppies out of my extra 10 gallon. I haven't had success with my other koi HMPK breeding, so I'm thinking about conditioning him once I get him moved. Anyway, here he is!

These are the breeder's professional pictures that look a lot better than mine

Thank you! I got him from a breeder! Her name is maranathabetta. She's on Instagram and aquabid. I have purchased 5 koi bettas from her and all have arrived healthy and happy!

Koi's all look very similar, but you can still tell them apart, you'r is toward the red side, while OP's is blue.

I love kois, I really want one, Too bad I can't set up another tank.

That's crazy! Mines looks similar, too.

He is currently in a 2.5 gallon, but I'm moving him to a 10 gallon soon.

All koi's look relatively similar, I'm not surprised they look alike. Jwills953, you have a yellow koi female right? He would be perfect to breed to her.

Yes, I have these two females and also the red koi. Which one do you think would be a better pair?

The one in the second picture has more of a koi pattern, I would go with her.

Okay, I was leaning towards her for the same reason. I originally purchased the blue female with the blue male for a potential pair. This picture was when I got her exactly one week ago. She has changed so much!! She doesn't even look like the same fish.

I have one that changed very similar to yours. She started out pure white and turned into a grizzly blue.
Can't wait to see how this pair turns out!

I knew bettas can change color but I didn't realize they could change so much in just a week. And I can't wait either! I'm thinking about starting a breeding log for this pair after conditioning.

Hello. Scored this one from a LPS here in Las Vegas. An elderly couple ordered a bunch for their wedding, but ended up changing their minds so they returned them to the LPS. There were a bunch of nice bettas to pick from, but I've been searching for a Koi that was healthy and vibrant and chose this one. Anyone help me identify what kind of fin type this would fall under and the gender? Thanks.

Looks like a male, do you have a picture of him flaring? He is a plakat for sure, but without seeing a ray count or how far he can spread his tail fin I can't say what he is - he may be a halfmoon plakat or a delta plakat.

Ooh, he's gorgeous! I'll leave identification to the more experienced people here, but I just had to comment.

I'm glad he went to a good home! I wonder what they were thinking of doing with all the fish after the wedding. Seems like an odd idea, and probably best that they didn't go through with it.

A number give the fish to the people that attend, which means the vase they are sitting in at the table. It is very inhumane to use live animals as centerpieces in this manner, but it is still something people do.

Ugh, people. I'd be quite annoyed to receive a live animal (extra responsibilities) that I did not ask for as a gift. I'm glad they realized it was a bad idea in time for some of the fish to have a chance.

They normally only give them out to people who want them (with the vase they are in), so they may have well ended up with a bunch of bettas that they didn't want is why they reconsidered.

I saw some of these at petco. Didnt see any with long fins though.

Thanks for the replies. I will try and get more pictures of his tail fin. I was searching specifically for Koi's and the ones at Petco did not seem very lively compared to the ones at the local fish store that I went to. It's sad to see how mistreated they are at the big chain stores.

Here's a better view with him flaring. I'm guessing halfmoon plakat?

Super delta, he doesn't quite have the D shape halfmoon plakats are known for, hang on I post a picture of one of my hmpk flaring (I got these from a breeder, I have a hmpk I got from the store as well and i'm not sure that he quite meets the requirement).
Not the prettiest picture, this is the dad of my current spawn.

I'm sorry I didn't even see your post, yeah they can be hard to tell apart sometimes (especially if you have a butt of a fish that goes 'nah i'd rather not flare, you got any food?').

F06008D3-5802-4853-8B84-165073BF7774.jpeg I got this beautiful koi Female yesterday, I’m assuming she a plakat? Could someone confirm? Does anyone know the age they normally sell betta at petco? (I would buy from a mom and pop store but there isn’t even one within a few hundred miles) would like to know how many months old she is but it’s really hard to tell. I love the yellow on her, she was the only koi female they got in the shipment! Her fins look a little wacky because I couldn’t get a great picture without her moving!

I think she might be too young to tell

Beautiful girl! To tell what tail type she is we would have to see a better picture of her caudal fin. Female bettas are usually sold around six months old.

I have no idea about fin types. Demeter is another good one for bettas

I’d need a better pictures. You look at the length of the analfin compared to the tail fin. Generally a female plakat’s anal will not be longer than the tail.

I’m going to assume she is a plakat because I’ve yet to see a non plakat koi, female or male, in petco.

She seems to be a plakat but again its hard to tell since we can't see the tail in the photo.

As far as age, Petco and chain stores generally do not sell very old pets, if you look at their hamsters and guinea pigs most of them are pretty young and this is because they get them from farms which are always producing fish and selling them as soon as they rich a few months old. So she is most likely less than a year. and also if you see at her body, it seems like her yellow coloring is just coming out.

She is a very chunky girl too which is odd for petco, most of their fish are pretty skinny

Very pretty girl! I love koi bettas. I work at Petco and I'm pretty sure we don't know the approximate age of the bettas that come in. I did hear that in general, bettas are shipped to chain pet stores at anywhere from several months to almost a year old depending on how long that tail type takes to almost fully develop. I heard this information floating around in the fish community a couple years ago and honestly haven't heard anything else since. Hope that helps.
