New here with a few questions!

Hey everybody!

I'm a new member here and recently have become very interested in aquariums and fish! I am 15 years old and have a perfect place in my room for what I plan of one 60-gallon tank and another tank that I don't know the size but have had it for years. I've joined this forum because I want to make sure I know everything about the life of my fish that I will be getting and can ask questions!

My dad also was avid with fish in his college years and mostly stuck with the Oscar fish, which he says is his favorite. He told me that you can pet them and they'll even eat out of your hands! They're like having a pet dog, but a fish! I went to the pet store and it was exactly like he explained! They followed me with their eyes just like my dog does.. it was epic. I'm definitively going to get one of those.

My Questions:
1. Is it bad for an Oscar to live with another Oscar or say a catfish or pleco? I've read they'll just swallow them up which can be bad for them, as well as they hurt themselves getting too excited being with other fish. I also have been told that it's best to keep one alone because they become more dependent on the owner and will give you pets and treat you like their best friend.

2. I say the "Fancy Goldfish" at the pet store tonight, and that was the NICEST fish I've ever seen!!! I am totally getting one of those, but I was wondering; can the fancy goldfish live with other fish? I want to have a museum of fish in my 60-gallon tank. Is that possible? Or will they fight?

3. I have a 10-gallon tank. Is that big enough for one oscar?

4. Will Plecos get along with other fish? Are they natural enemies of some fish?

I basically want to keep my Oscar alone in the 10-gallon and have an array of fish in the 60-gallon. I want to put the Fancy Goldfish along with a pleco, and some other nice fish in their to make it look nice in the 60-gallon. Is that possible?

Thanks everyone!! It is very appreciated

Welcome!

Both oscars and goldfish are large fish with HUGE bioloads. You could keep one oscar or 2-3 fancy goldfish in the 60 gallon but the 10 gallon is WAYYYY too small for either of them. Plecos are quite peaceful but you want to avoid the Common Pleco usually sold in stores which can get 24"+ long and requires 200-300 gallon tanks. A bristlenose pleco maxes out at about 6" so they're a much better choice. You could keep one in with an oscar in the 60 gallon.

Putting a oscar in a 10 gallon won't be a good idea. They do get big.
Most fish follow the rule"fits in your mouth you eat it."

Also, to make sure your fishkeeping ventures are a success, be sure to read up on the nitrogen cycle <---

10 gal is way to small for an oscar. If you really want one get a bigger tank.

As others have stated, both goldfish, oscars, and plecos get big. One oscar needs a minimum of 60ish gallons, but this is still on the small side for them. Fancy goldfish need about 30 gallons, plus 10 for any more. Common plecos get huge, so don't get one, but bristlenoses can go with 30 gallons.

Goldfish should not be mixed with tropical fish like plecos or oscars. They have different needs for temperature and habitat.

I highly recommend reading up on the nitrogen cycle. This is essential in fish keeping, and will help you understand why goldfish need huge tanks. Also, Fishlore has some very nice fish profiles that give you the basic idea of the requirements for the fish you want. I highly recommend poking around on those pages to see what species catch your eye, and get an understanding of the basic needs for the fish you are looking at. This includes tank size, temperature, and tank mates.

Thanks everybody! I may bump up to a 90 Gallon. Do you think if I get a 90 Gallon that it can hold an oscar, pleco, and fancy gold fish? Will those three fish get along fine?

Goldfish aren't tropical, they need lower temperatures than the oscar and pleco (which are tropical). Plus, oscars can be quite aggressive, so you'd want to avoid slow fish with long flowing fins (like goldfish).

Oscar an pleco yes, but goldfish no because there cold water and are going to get bullied by the oscar or even killed.

Okay, thanks guys I really appreciate it.

Alright, I'm seeing. This can get expensive! I don't think I have enough money for a 90 gallon. Is there any way I can use a 60 gallon and a 10 gallon? Maybe keep the oscar in the 10 gallon since it's still a baby?

I'm open to all suggestions.

Oscars grow REALLY fast so you really want to have a much bigger tank for him from the get go. Why not use the 60 gallon for the oscar? You really can't have both oscars and gold fish with only one large tank, sorry :/

Ok. I kind of want to make it a muesuem, but if I want that I guess I either have to settle for smaller and not as cool fish or get two tanks. I'll think about it.. I'll probably end up getting the 60 gallon and an oscar and pleco, though!! That'll work, right?

It should, as long as you get a smallish oscar and a largeish bristlenose pleco

Yes, exactly what I was thinking! Okay, cool cool. I'm going to get it tomorrow.. maybe later I'll get another tank for the fancy goldfish. I'll post updates tomorrow.

So there's no way to put a Fancy Goldfish in a 10 gallon, right?

The 60 gallon will work for a while assuming its 48 3/8 x 12 7/8 x 23 7/8 until it reaches 2 years or younger, when it will be too long to even turn in the tank. So I recommend a 75+ gallon tank for an oscar. But for now a 60 gall is good while it's young.

It's so exciting to get a new fish tank! Personally, if you're looking for a fish tank cleaner, I've got 3 corydora's and one guppy in my 10gal. tank and they seem to be doing fine, however, I have no idea how they'd get along with oscar's or other fish.. Haha, haven't learned that yet..
However, I wish you luck on your fish tanks and if anything, look into the different breeds of bottom-feeders/algae eaters. I'm sure you'll come up with somethin. =D Good luck!

Do not put an Oscar in a ten gallon! I know you're new at this but an Oscar will even outgrow your 60 gallon. Some can grow up to almost a foot long in one year!

Goldfish are good with other goldfish only and even they get real big so maybe two or three only in your 60.
