New Goldfish, Worries About Her Dying..?

Hi,
My name is Elizabeth, and I am new to this fish forum. I currently own 5 goldfish, 3 itty bitty, and 2 of them around 5 inches long.
A couple days ago, I bought a small common goldfish at the store to add to my new 75 gallon tank because I thought she was just really cute and really pretty.. The 75 gallon tank is new and I’ve been running the filter in it for the past week about. I don’t have any aeration in it besides the filter right now, because the output water creates a lot of movement on the surface and lots and lots of bubbles (almost too much..). The filter I have right now is a fluval 304. The water I used conditioner in, and I also have a couple live plants in and some sand and substrate special for planting plants in aquariums.

Back to the little goldfish at the store.. when I bought her, she was with hundreds of other goldfish in a tank similarly sized to my 75 gallon. She already looked thin and her fins were clamped to her sides, but I wanted to see if I could save her. At first, after floating her in a bag in the water for 20 minutes, she received Introduction into the new big open tank with leisure and curiousity; she seemed to be doing well. Seeing as she was so little and in such a big tank (she is about an inch and a half) I felt compelled to put my other two little Goldie’s in with her, about the same size. Not sure if this was wise, as now I’m worried about them getting sick if she is sick.. but so far they seem healthy and happy, in gross contrast to the new fish now.. She has been staying in one corner of the tank today, sheltered by fake plants and a piece of wood. She is almost resting on the sand at the bottom of the tank and she is moving little. Oftentimes, she is resting on her side or curved :/ I am pretty sure she is going to die... but I’m wondering if there is any hope she might not. Any suggestions for what I could do to try to save her at this point...?
Thanks!

Also, here are a couple pictures of her.. the one from just yesterday and the other one from today :/

Tank
  • What is the water volume of the tank? 75 gallons
  • Does it have a filter? Fluval 304
  • Does it have a heater? No
  • What is the water temperature? Room temp/ about 69 degrees
  • What is the entire stocking of this tank? (Please list all fish and inverts.) 2 baby common goldfish, 1 baby fantail

Maintenance
  • How often do you change the water? Brand new tank, filled about a week and a half ago, fish put in a few days ago
  • How much of the water do you change? Will be about 10 gallons a week
  • What do you use to treat your water? API Stress Coat
  • Do you vacuum the substrate or just the water?vacuum the substrate

Parameters
  • Did you cycle your tank before adding fish? No... :/
  • What do you use to test the water? I bring a sample of the water to the pet store
  • What are your parameters? We need the exact numbers, not just “fine” or “safe”. Unknown, as of now..

Feeding
  • How often do you feed your fish? About two times a day, sometimes three
  • How much do you feed your fish? Small pinch or 3 pellets
  • What brand of food do you feed your fish? Tetra fun goldfish flakes, Tetra Blood worms, Aqueon Tropical flakes, or Omega goldfish pellets
  • Do you feed frozen or freeze-dried foods? Just the blood worms on occasion

Illness & Symptoms:
  • How long have you had this fish? 3 days
  • How long ago did you first notice these symptoms? today/when a I got her, extreme symptoms started today.
  • In a few words, (more room for details below) what are the symptoms? Resting in corner at bottom of tank, she almost looks dead
  • Have you started any treatment for the illness? No
  • Was your fish physically ill or injured upon purchase? She looked skinny and her fins were clamped
  • How has its behavior and appearance changed, if at all: no swimming now, just barely moving. Breathing heavily, gills are red

My guess is that it’s ammonia poisoning from her old tank which was very full, a I was hoping she would be able to recover in a new, big empty tank, but I’m not sure.. :/

looks like nitrite poisoning..hopefully from the store. when you go quickly from high nitrite to low nitrite that can also cause mortality. It is probably too late but you could try a meth blue bath if you have some or can buy some.
With goldies I think it is totally worth it to invest in a test kit and read about the aquarium nitrogen cycle if you haven't already (I can't tell from your profile)- so important with goldfish!

And welcome to fishlore!

+1 for nitrite poisoning. It's probably from the tank she was in since your other two are doing fine but I would do a big water change anyway just in case something is off in your water. I hope she pulls through but if not it most likely wasn't your fault

Thanks for the help Vaughn and rainbowsprinkles!
Sadly, she passed away a few days ago, but now at least I know better to be more careful in the future when purchasing fish. I will also try to get a water testing kit as well when I get the chance, for now it's a bit of an extra expense, but once I can I will.. Thanks again!

feeder goldfish aren't taken care of very well from the breeder or in the stores. so you really have to pick out the healthiest ones.

it really is "survival of the fittest" when it comes to feeder goldfish
