New Girl Betta For Future Breeding

I am so excited. I saw this girl and just had to have her for my male betta to breed with. So I got her then did the research (yes I know research before not after) and realized I can't just throw her in the tank with him so she is in my community tank till we move or can find a place to put a 20 long with divider in our current tank. We should be moving in a little under a year so hoping we can keep her and him good till then (I have little experience with bettas but I'm good at doing research as I go and here is always a good place for information and help when I need it). But anyways she is super pretty though finding a name is going to be hard lol also put a pick of my Onyx just cause I think k he's gorgeous!

Hmmm I don't know how to tell you this, but that is a male plakat. He would sooner kill your male CT rather than make love.

How can you tell? The pictures of a male and female look really similar.

I agree on it being a male. The ventral fins are longer than the analfin which is a characteristic of male bettas. Pretty guy though! I want him.

Body shape is 100% male. A female will have a fat belly, much shorter ventral fins, have a white egg spot between said fins, and you'd be able to see the yellow triangle of eggs/ovaries within the body cavity (specifically in light colored fish). You've got a lovely HMPK male.

Don't wait too long to find a nice female for them. Bettas breed best at a younger age (under a year old actually). In the mean time, do all the research you can. Breeding bettas is hard work, and don't skimp on live food cultures as they are a must.

I can't do it in under a year for that reason, time and space but if I don't get to breed them then it wasn't meant to be and maybe I'll find new males I might want to breed with a female when I can actually do it right. At least now I can actually do the research to be able to be successful ish at it lol

Are they pet store fish? If so I don't suggest you breed them anyway, there gentics are the worst.

The blue marble is from LPS the black crown is from my local aquarium guy who breeds a lot of his own stock.

Ok, thanks! I'm as well planning to breed from my local fish store who has imported bettas.

In theory, not all pet store betras have bad genes. I think the lovely plakat would make nice fry if paired with a similar female. All the bettas I’ve spawned were from pet stores but I was careful to avoid chosing breeding stock with poor body/fin shape. Keep in mind that pet store bettas are imported from breeders, they’re just not the “cream of the crop”.

Sure you can’t know for certain the genetic background of pet store fish, but IMO it is better to try and fail with lower quality/cheap fish than spending a small fortune on fancy imported fish and have them fail due to inexperience on your part.

Agreed. I learned that with my guppies. Bought the specialty ones in order to get neat pretty fry and fry and parents all died. Lost probably 600 or more doing that. Now I get some 15 cent females and a few fancy male and females and I have fry. Though mom's are still dying after but 5 different LPS have all said they having same problem so is probably just weak stock. The bettas I'm hoping I can breed but I want to do it right and right now I have neither time nor space to do it right. I'll keep researching and getting suggestions here and hopefully eventually I will have pretty betta fry.
