New fish tank...out of nowhere!

I went and visited my grandparents today. Started talking about my aquariums, and my grandma was like "we have an aquarium in the garage just collecting dust. You can have it." So, I ended up bringing home a 20 gallon aquarium, which is in very good condition!

Moral of the story--treat your grandparents with love!

Very cool. The other moral here is to talk about your hobby a lot!

Yay! Free tank!
What are you going to stock it with?

Yes, free is great! Especially when in great condition! No idea what I will be stocking with. I'm still in the process of buying and setting up (piece by piece) my 40 gallon tank. I'm guessing this will be a drawn out side project. Maybe a tank for the master bedroom. We'll see what the wife thinks about that!?!?

Congrats on the new tank! I find one of the exciting parts in fishkeeping is starting up a new aquarium.

yay free tank!

I agree half the fun is in the planning and dreaming.

Definitely. I'll have been in the planning stages for my 40 for a few months before the tank even enters my house. So now, I guess I'll get to do some more planning!

My husband was against a tank in the bedroom.
He came home one day and found one up and running.

lol Lucy, I want to know your secret, I have threatened one but I was told it would be thrown (yes literally) outside the bedroom door.

We have 7 tanks running in our bedroom, it helps me sleep. the white noise from the filters blocks out any street noise.

I tried that route already....

The general response has been, and I quote from her "Cant I just have ONE room without fishtanks in it?" to which my response was "Ok, I won't put one in the bathroom" She then proceeded to go upstairs and get my pillow and drop it in the office with me, guess she is saying ill be sleeping down here with a fish tank then.

It's easier when you're the wife I guess. Plus we live on a main road and my bedtime is 8 or 9 am.

You can always get the 20 up and running with a lot of extra filter media.
Throw some ammonia in to get it cycling.
Then you can seed your 40 when you get it.

BEEEEP wrong answer! Men! Sheesh lol

Luckily my husband knows it's important to Q fish.
That was my 'reasoning'. "It'll only be there for a couple of weeks"
After a couple of weeks he got used to waking up to see happy fish.
So there they stayed. lol

It's easier when you're the wife I guess.
I think you're right.

oh I knew it was the wrong answer, to her there is no right answer to it other than no. She need the radio to sleep (I can sleep like a brick thru a hurricane or an ice storm, and yes I have done both) She tolerates the fish more than anything and she doesn't want to hear running water all night from the filters and have to get up and use the facilities all the time lol.

Oh well not back to your regularly scheduled thread about a great new to them 20gal fish tank that was a gift!

Using the 20 as a media starter is a fantastic idea. You'll have the cycle for the 40 squared away and you'll have a cycled 20 for whatever you decide to do with it.

I'll definitely be seeding my tanks with filter media from my other tanks, but right now I'm waiting on both, as I don't have enough money to get supplies for either right now (I'm getting married in less than 3 weeks). After the big day, should be able to start purchasing supplies, and I'll be using my 29 gallon to seed the 40. And then the 40 will probably seed the 20, as I'm still not sure where it will end up.

And I guess I'm pretty lucky, my future wife has told me "that if it makes you truly happy, keep doing it" when talking about my aquariums. She's a little more reluctant about my ideas for a pond in the backyard. But lucky for me, I'm also being given a free pond liner as well from one of my friends.

Congratulations and good luck with the wedding! I like your plan for seeding and such. It's great that your fiance respects your hobby. Does she have any interest?

Are you two going to register for wedding gifts at a LFS, Petsmart, PetCo? ;-)

Not a whole lot...I feel like I have so many hobbies that I take up for the both of us! But I try to get her into things...maybe someday! I do love her so much!

And yes, if only I could have registered at my LFS...

Hey, with amazon.com wishlists, you can register for anything! LOL

It's a shame she's not into fish. I was going to suggest you "give" her the 20 gallon, then she wouldn't mind it in the house!

Haha, if only I had more time! I do let her pick out some of the fish (reasonable...I research then give her options), which she enjoys. She picked out Scooter, our White/Blue/Red Crowtail Betta. She also stated she wanted neon tetras in one of our tanks, so there will definitely be a large school of those in either the 20 or 40.

Hey all, here's an update. I filled up the 20 gallon gift today and it held water! One step closer!
