New fish Mommy and confused...

Ok so when I was a child we had tanks off and on. Well my mom recently passed away and I got her tank. Unfortunately all her fish died. But we decided before they all died to get new tank. Now I have 2 tanks. Hers and a new one. I have several fish in each tank. In 1 I have a guppy that has the black gravid spot on her under belly. Last night it was like a pink color. No babies...this morning it's black again. What's going on? How did I tell when she's gonna have fry? My other tank has 2 different fish that I think is pregnant but I am really not sure. One is a Mickey Mouse Platy. The other is a Molly I believe. Can anyone help? Not sure how to post pics so that you can see. If anyone can tell me that I'll post them. Thank you in advance.

Thank you. I was on a mobile phone and couldnt seem to get the pics to upload. I am now on my laptop and will try in just a minute to load the pic.
Both tanks are 29 gallons.
I do not know about the nitrogen cycle, but will read up in just a few minutes.

Welcome to the forum. And my condolences to you.

Can you give us some more info? What sizes are these tanks? Do you know about the nitrogen cycle?

Here's a link on how to attach a photo and I'm sure we can help ID and see how far along they are.

This is the Guppy last night.

This is the best pic I could get of her this morning...

Here is the Molly. Not sure if you can tell anything. She seems to keep moving pretty fast.

Here is the Platy.

If I need to get better pics I will try. Thank you

Also I have test strips and have done tests almost every day. Everything seems ok with them.

The guppy does look pregnant but she'll be close to giving fry when the belly is more squared off. I'm not sure about the others so let's wait for more responses.

ETA: The test strips are very inaccurate so if possible, I would buy the API Freshwater Master Test Kit which is used by most of us here. If you can't get one right away, see if your LFS uses liquid tests and ask them to test your water samples out of both tanks. It would also help to get results of your tap water.

Hey there Nicky5053.
My condolences to you. Regarding the molly, I cannot see very well because the picture is a little blurry but I know when my molly is pregnant when looking at her from the front you can see the sides of her belly are wider than her face. I can tell when she is close to birth because her belly squares off and she hangs near the top of the tank and chases off anything that comes near her. She is a marbled so I have never seen her gravid spot. Good luck!

I have the API strips. But will look for the other kit you mentioned. I will check with my LFS. Thank you so much

Thank you. I will see if I can get a better pic later. She sure is fast today for some reason. She usually just kinda sits in one spot but today she seems to be all over the tank. I will keep updating when/if we see babies. My kids sure are excited thinking there are maybe some coming.

Maybe these will help still not the best in the world but the Platy refuses to come up from the bottom and the Molly refuses to sit still for a second

Welcome to the forum. On the mobile app to the left of the response space is a "+" sign. Click that and it will open the response in a bigger window with 3 icons at the bottom. The icon of a mountain & sun/moon is for attaching pictures. Good luck.

I don't know if it's because the pictures are unclear but they look like males to me. The platy also looks like it has clamped fins and if its sitting on the bottom, it may be stressed from water conditions.

I recommend getting Seachem Prime as a water conditioner that also detoxifies ammonia and nitrite up to 1ppm for 24hrs. I would also do a large water change (at least 50%) and see if that helps.

Do you have any other fish in these tanks besides the guppy in the first one and the molly and platy in the second tank? If so, can you list all the inhabitants for each?

I would see if you can get the test kit mentioned asap and also pick up a bacteria supplement like Seachem Stability to help cycle your tanks.

Lets see if I can remember what they are...its hard to remember what all they are. Kids went crazy buying/picking out fish. We had been buying from Petsmart and they kept dying. I was getting replacements, tests all showed normal ranges on everything, yet fish kept dying. So we are no longer buying from there.
In one tank I have...
1 guppy
1 mickey mouse platy
2 tetras
6 I really am not sure what they are. They are glow fish.
1 alge eater
3 little rock cleaners. Dont remember the names of them either.

In the second tank...
1 alge eater
3 little rock cleaners. As listed above as well
1 mickey mouse platy
1 molly
1 shark
1 neon tetra
2 skirt tail things
1 blood tail thing

Unfortunately, you have some stocking issues as well and if these tanks are uncycled, the elevated ammonia levels may be contributing to the platy's stressed behavior.

Tank 1 -
Can you get pictures of the tetras, the 6 glow fish, the algae eater and the 3 cleaners (possibly nerite snails?)

Tank 2 -
Does the algae eater look the same as the one in tank 1? And can you get a pic of the shark, the 2 "skirt tail" fish and the "blood tail" fish?

The tetras are schooling fish and need to be in a group of at least 6. The shark will most likely get too big for your tank so it may need to get rehomed. And depending on what kind of algae eaters you have, they may need to get rehomed as well.

I'll try to get pics very soon. It may be a bit though. Have to do a few things before getting back to that

This is the best I can do with them. Some of these little stinkers swim super fast. The blood tail thing is a crazy swimmer. He's always making circles. And the 6 things (3 in each tank) I couldn't remember are loaches.

The "loach" in the pic looks more like an albino corydoras. Can you get a more close-up pic?

The skirt tetra, the serpae tetra (on the bottom left pic) and the glo fish tetras are all schooling fish and need to be in a group of at least 6 each.

I can't ID the shark so hopefully someone else can. The algae eater is a pleco but again, someone else will need to ID. If it's a common pleco, it will get too large for your tanks and you'll need to rehome. I also can't tell what the "blood tail" fish is so if you can get a better pic, that will help.

I'm going to assume these tanks are uncycled especially since Petsmart uses test strips which are inaccurate and most of the time, they'll tell you your water is fine anyway. I would invest in the API Freshwater Master Test Kit and post your results for both your tanks. I'd also pick up Prime and Stability as mentioned before to help keep your fish safe and to cycle your tanks.
