New Fish In The Tank

hi,

I bought two days ago a small butterfly telescope. It looked healthy and livish and I dopped it this afternoon in my 27 gallons tank where there's is a huge black moor.
My black moore doesn't seem bothered by the new arrival, it bit the butterfly a couple of times but didn't seem aggressive at all. It looked more like it was "kissing" it.
Tonight I have fed them and the telescope wouldn't eat. He keeps swimming in a corner behind the plants and seem pretty scared.
Is this a normal behaviour?

HI nellino, my guess is your moor is showing signs of aggression due to crowded waters. A single fancy or fantail goldfish requires about 55 gal for the first fish, plus 10-15 for each additional, so 27 gallons is somewhat too small for both of them especially if as you say the Moor is 'huge'.

so, do you think those "kisses" were an attempt to harm the butterfly? I'm a newbie and not very expert in behaviour.
I have watched them a lot today and that happened only twice. The moor looked pretty quiet and didn't seem bothered by the new presence . It looked more curious to me.

HI nellino, may be that they just need time to settle down together, keep an eye on them especially on the new one to spot any injuries that may happen but at least it looks like it has somewhere to hide when it wants. The tank is still pretty small, any chance of up grading to one a bit bigger?

hI seasoldier,
for the moment the situation is still pretty quiet. I haven't seen the black moore "kissing" the butterfly anymore. It seems to me that that they have sort of subdivided the territory this way: the Whole tank for the black moore and the corner behind the plants for the small butterfly. When the black moore swims towards the plants he doesn't freak out anymore but it does when I get closer. Today I saw him eat some pellets, so I hope his appetite is increasing a little bit.
The black moore instead seems to have less appetite and it's weird . Is there any chance that the old boy has to adjust to the new situation too and feels stressed out?
I do want to upgrade to a bigger tank and I'll probably do it when (and if) the butterfly will grow a little bigger. Not to mention my life will be a little quiter.

HI nellino, sounds good, they're probably just getting used to each other, your Moor's nose has maybe been put out a little with the new tank mate but I'm sure it will get over it. Good luck for the future.

No for 55 gallon tank , u can keep up to 3 fancies as long as u keep up with regular large water changes and strong filtration

hI ,
as a matter of fact I was thinking about upgrading to a 55 gallon tank with none other than my black moor and the butterfly telescope.
My dream would be a small pond on my terrace but I read that these fancy goldfish can't tolerate the cold. Too bad !
By the way, what would I do when I decide to get a bigger tank? Should I cycle it from scratch or I just can move the noodles and my old filter to the new one?

You can use the water & filter media from the old set up to the new one then top up with treated water & put some bio starter like JBL Denitrol in to boost the good bacteria & you should be good to go pretty much straight away.

Just wanted to mention a 30 gallon is the minimum for a single fancy goldfish , a 55 gallon you could easily do 3 Fancy Goldfish.
I wouldn't worry to much , they'll most likely work it out in matter of a few days.

when you do upgrade just move your whole filter to the new tank. No need to bring water, there's nothing beneficial in their. Just make sure the water temp in the new tank matches that of the old.

thank you guys! I didn't know it was going to be so easy ! I thought I would cycle the tank from scratch.
By the way, the situation here seems improved. The black moor's appetite is almost back to normal and the butterfly is eating more and more, it's still watchful but doesn't freak out when I get close to the tank any more.
It looks even bigger to me....but maybe I'm biased
