new filter, will this work for my tank?

I just got a eheim 2236 canister filter as a gift, and wanted to know if this is filter is efficient enough for a 55 gallon tank?

I originally wanted to get a eheim 2217, but obviously I'm not going to get it now in addition to the 2236, that would just be too much lol
Anyway, I'd love to hear opinions or thoughts on how the eheim 2236 would do on a 55 gallon tank. I'm really not that knowledgeable about filters so I appreciate all help and information

It depends on what your stock is. It would work, but I usually like to have more GPH when it comes to filtration. You could add a HOB with it, or if you just want to use 1 filter, a 2217 is perfect for a heavily, or lightly stocked 55 IMO.

Yeah I'd love to have the 2217 but I'm not going to spend that much money to buy one when I already have a eheim canister.

Once I'm done stocking my tank it should be at least moderately if not heavily stocked. I'm planning on adding a school of boesmanI rainbows and yoyo loaches.

So I guess my question is if the 2236 is good enough to filter this tank on its own or should I add more filtration? And if I should add more filtration, exactly how much more should I add?

A large HOB would do the trick. A Emperor 400, or a Aquaclear 70 would be fine. The HOB will add some more surface movement And doubling up on filters, will requires less filter maintenance from you. Not that cleaning them is difficult, but the less you have to mess with them, the better.

Thank you very much for the advice!

Would you happen to know how loud the filters are? They're going to be in my room so the quieter the better.

An Emperor 400 is a biowheel filter so if you did get it, really the only noise it would make would be like a bubbling sound or a trickle of water.

As for the AC70 - I think it should be quiet enough, not really loud. The largest of the AC filters I've had is the AC50 and it was quite quiet. Not exactly silent, but it was really noise at all.

Lets see...the 2236 is 185 GPH. For canister filtration you need at least 5x turnover but more is better, so 5x is about 275 GPH. The 2217 would of been more efficient as it's 264 GPH but you got the other as a gift, that was nice. You are going to need more filtration. I'm not the best when it comes to filtration though. lol

I've never had a Aquaclear, but I would imagine they are pretty quiet. Lots of people highly recommend them. I do have a few Emperors, and the only problems I have had with them is if sand got in them and messes up the impeller. Then they got very noisy. Other than that, I would not hesitate to have one, or any Eheim in my bedroom. They are both very quiet IMO.

Or an powerhead pointed to the surface

From my experience(not very long;D) the Aquaclear is quiet, but a lot of water bypasses. On the contrary, the sponge holds a ton of debris.

Thanks very much for the advice all!
I probably will get a large HOB as suggested.
I'm pretty sure I have a used emperor 280 in the attic, but I'm not sure if it works or even how to use it lol. I'm guessing the emperor 280 less powerful than the 400? So I'd probably still need more filtration right?
