New Filter Question

Hello,

I recently moved my betta from a 2.5 gallon tank (it is completely cycled) to a new 5 gallon tank. The filter that I had (Tetra Whisper for up to 3 gallons) is not strong enough for the new tank.

I moved the Tetra Filter to the new tank along with all of the gravel, etc., so that I could keep the beneficial bacteria.

I also added a new hang on filter that can handle up to a 7 gallon tank.

I am running both filters at the same time.

Is this ok? How long should I keep the smaller filter running? How will I know when the new filter is ready to run on it's own?

Thanks in advance!

Since your tank is already seeded with BB you should be able to remove the old one in about a week or so without issue. Also, as long as your betta doesn't have problems with too much water movement you can keep the old filter running indefinitely. No such thing as too much filtration.

Pull the media out of the old one and put it in the new one. Then do whatever you want with the old one.

Using both is great. The filter should have an area where the bacteria grows, as well as the filter media that you normally replace. If you use both for a while, this bacteria should spread over time into the new filter's media as well, given proper parameters.

I wish this would work, but the old cartridge won't fit in the new filter. I can keep the filter sponge, however, and use it.

Thanks!

I could keep both for a while. The old one is an internal with suction cups, and I hate the look of it. Thanks for the advice!

Ok, thanks!
