40 Gallon Tank New filter died! HELP!

Hello everyone!

So. I recently bought a new marineland 200 for my 40g. Within less than 2 weeks, the filter started grinding, and then died completely.

I set up my old topfin filter with the full filter media, but that filter is struggling. The overflow has been going since set up.

Just took apart the marineland to troubleshoot it, nothing. It's fully dead.

The water in my tank is white and cloudy, and murky with some debris. My fish are being reclusive and one is swimming weird..

Params:

Nitrites: 0
Nitrates: 60+ (going to WC... weird because planted tank??)
Ammonia: 0
pH: 7.8

going to do a 50% WC to combat cloudiness and nitrates... but I have school today so I cannot focus on the tank much.

What should I do? This is my prize tank and i really don't want to lose anyone!

I'll be getting a new Marineland as the filter comes with 3 year warranty, a replacement i guess.

I'm intending to return it... but I don't have the money to buy a sponge filter, sadly. I have no choice but to just get a replacement.

 

If you return it, you can get a replacement for free or store credit. A sponge filter for a 40 gallon is at most 20$ for a top quality one

My local Petsmart doesn't sell sponge filters, as well... they don't do refunds typically IME, only replacements.

I can try but yeah. The filter itself was $20 and I can't afford an air pump.

 

If you want a budget option, you could POSSIBLY make a very crude pvc overflow and outflow I’m not an expert but it could work.
