I am about to start setting up my first discus tank. Im doing a 90g.
My question is this.
Is it true that if the discus breed the babies will be attracted to a dark background and there for not be able to feed of there parents?
I was planning on painting a med to dark blue with white pool filter sand
Lots of plants.
FYI.. i am not looking to start a breeding program at the moment but if it happens i would like the fry to survive.

I don't think I've heard that one before, certain strains of discus will get darker during breeding but the fry should still be able to tell the difference between background and parents. What size discus are you planning on getting? If you plan on getting younger ones between 2 and 3 inches it might be a better idea to start off with a bare bottom tank since younger ones need more food and more maintenance.

I thought it sounded kinda ridiculous

Yes it is kind of silly to thing such an intelligent species of fish would confuse an inanimate piece of paper with its parents lol

86 ssinit has planted discus experience, he can lead you through it
Most adult discus will darken up during breeding time.. definitly do not want to have a dark background

Not sure which way the fry go dark or light. But they do go for one or the other. As to breeding if your going to you will need to put the mated pair into another tank. They will eat the eggs the first few times.
As to a planted tank they need more work than the standard bare bottom discus tank.

Thanks for all the input. I look forward to getting this going. I have 0 interest in a bare bottom tank at the moment and have done many planted aquariums. Cant wait ill post pics when the time comes.

Stick to plants you can grow in regular gravel. Don’t use any of the aquasoils or soil or eco.....makes it to hard to clean. Tank still need to be clean. You will be doing 50% water changes every other day till there 6”.

I don’t use pool sand can you vacuum the sand? It’s not just water changes you have to do you have to vacuum the gravel at every water change. Planted discus is a little harder than just discus

Yes it can be vacuumed. Its fine sand so you have to be on top of the control valve of the python to cut flow if start sucking to much sand

Yeah I never liked sand because of that. Your always removing sand from the tank. The gravel is just easier and your going to want easy. My tank is a 125. Even now I do 3 50% water changes a week. Discus need clean water. Now my water changes are all vacuumed so it takes me about an hour. See with young discus your feeding about 6-10 times a day. That’s why you do all the water changes. Check out the thread discus Gang updates. Ask plenty of questions.
