Have you read about the nitrogen cycle and is there other fish in the tank, they also require more than just algae, I recommend a sinking wafer food for cat fish and they will require other foods to supplement their diet. Check out the pleco fact pages for a bit more info.

Congrats on your new BN pleco. At least I am assuming that is what you mean. If so look on the current thread Plecos!! share yours. On page 3 halfway down the page I wrote a post on how and what to feed a BN plecos the veggies as well the wafers and shrimp pellets and some fruits. It was also reprinted on page 16 of that same thread. Please give it a read and let me know if you have any questions. They are my favorite fish. They need food besides any algae and biofilm . They also need a piece of real driftwood to rasp on. Alison

Currently raising a baby one and YES to everything above! Just taught mine to eat cucumber because he didnt care for the wafers. They like zuchiniI too! What do you advise if I get my driftwood from a petco where its already submerged in a pleco tank? Think it is safe? Might make a thread on that. But back to helping the OP.. I killed a pleco because I thought I could "quickly" cycle a tank and you really can't rush it... Let it cycle and get stable and add more hardy fish first. I used danios once I reached close to the end of my cycle

I have bought two pieces of driftwood that was planted with anubias tanks at my fish store, Pet Supermarket. All I did was check for snails and put them in my tanks with no problem. Makes for happy plecos. Alison

Yeah! They let those snails take over at the big box stores. Most their tanks have them lol. And I was holding off on the wood because I was hoping he would eat the wafer with wood in it but he shows 0interest lol so I got him on a cucumber diet and he needs wood

Have you read my post about feeding them? They do need variety. They use the driftwood to rasp on and also to hide under and take a nap under or on it, in between eating. My male will go partly under the driftwood, flat on his back and let go of the wood , then out like a light for a nap. Fortunately I had seen a couple of posts on here with pictures of others napping that way so I didn't panic thinking he had passed away. Did give me a start though.

Yes to all of the above. They will eat a lot of variety of things, mine love everything from algae wafers to zucchinI to minI pumpkins!
AND mine often sleeps upside down with its mouth wide open!

Thanks so much for posting the picture. You kind of have to see it to believe it because most fish don't sleep like that. Alison

Nothing surprises me about fish habits any more. I have had fish that ate ( daily I might add! ) the paint off of my one decorations, A pleco that sleeps upside down, nerite snails that bejeweled my Mystery snails shell in a perfect concentric circle, the list goes on!
