The fish still look incredibly awesome, but I am a bit disappointed in the seller. He either doctors the picture used on aquabid or it was not a picture of the same fish. I understand color changes when a fish is stressed, but the body coloration even when the male is calm is nowhere near as black as the picture showed. I doubt if we buy from the gentleman again, but here are some pics.

That's the male of course. Again, very beautiful fish, but not what was in the picture on the auction.

Female betta.

The male is a bit darker in the tank, he got more stressed than the female did when put in the isolation cup for the picture.

Cool. I love Black Orchids, some of those on AB are so nice.

What was the sellers name?
I plan on buying some bettas and don't want a ripoff.

Jacko, I PMed the information you asked for to you. I believe it would be unprofessional of me as a moderator to post a name on the public forum space in that manner. Hope that is not an inconvenience.

Tom, Thanks a ton for the offer, but we've bred bettas in the past and have a pretty good handle on it. It would only waste your friend's time.

Everyone else, we will accept your compliments on the fish' behalf... x

I see what you mean, I was expecting they'd be a much deeper black but they are beautiful for sure. Hopefully they will darken at least a little bit more in time. I look forward to seeing the results of their 1st spawn. ;D

OK, that female is beautiful. I'd have to set up a new tank if I saw one like that in the shop.

And the male is magic. Am more a female kind of gal, though.

I'm not a specialist at this, but I have done some work with photoshop, and that picture looks like it was tampered with. The lines around the "veins" of the tail are too sharp, and there is too much difference between light and dark. There's also a definitive line between background and fish, a solid black line like that doesn't happen in nature. I would guess that they just increased the contrast, and probably darkened the fish a bit.

And I don't think it's wrong to say that you feel that a seller did not accurately portray their goods. (Though I can appreciate the roundabout way you let us know )

  • #21
yea, i'd agree that the photo is altered. a relatively quick bit of color correction, a couple filters and you have that pic. it could even be batch processed to a point.

Yep.

I just mainly posted about the issue with the auction and tampered picture so that people on Fishlore can know to be more upstanding than that. I think it is petty and bad business practices to not portray EXACTLY what it is you are dealing with. Again, I am very happy with the fish though, and perhaps we can make some beautiful babies.

My brother in law, who's desperately sensible, was really disgusted. He left our living room and his only comment was: 'This is like a fishstore. Ridiculous!'.

Did someone mention unwanted guests?

My dad says that as each day passes, our house becomes more like a zoo(with all the fish and some zebra finches on the way).

We've got four tanks around here (the parents only know about three, the fourth is in the bedroom, and since they think we're nuts just having those, we're not going to go out of our way to tell them about the fourth), as well as three cats. We had a fourth cat for awhile, but that was only temporary while we found her a home.

So, yeah, our parents think that we've got a zoo here, too.

Well I have 5 including the hospital tank with Nate in it right now and that is about all I really have room for, but I would have more if I could. I am just nuts for them. I am going to have more bettas some day, I know I will.

But for today, I do not think I would have much problem getting people into the kitchen, I am baking bread and everyone will go in there when the bread is hot and the butter is flowing. I wish you were all here and we would have a hot bread and jam party with fresh brewed coffee and tea.

We setup two separate 3 gallon clear plastic containers yesterday for the male and one of the two females. They have darkened up, btw, the guy obviously used tranquilizer without informing us. The picture was still doctored, but the fish are looking worlds better, and we will get pictures soon, but back to my point. Within 3-5 minutes of being in side-by-side containers the female started dropping eggs and the male has started a bubblenest, both being awesome signs of fertility. Within a week's time the female should be ready again and we should have no problem having babies within a week or two.

I would never walk into someone's house and tell them they're nuts for having a $5K surround sound system, a $3K fridge (or anything else I'm not interested in). People only seem to feel free to pass those rude judgements about our pets.

Yeah, I know people thought I was nuts having cages of rats in my kitchen (and now tanks all over) but if I don't owe those people money and they aren't paying my mortgage, they can just mind their own business!
