New BIG fish tank!

I am so excited I had to tell someone (as my poor husband is less than thrilled). I just spoke to a woman who had some heaters on Craig's List that I bought. She is selling me a 150 gallon tank with hood, light, filters and heaters for $70! I can't believe my luck. We are going to pick it up next Saturday morning. I am both thrilled and terrified at the same time. This is huge for me and is going to take a lot of planning. There are going to lots of questions coming from me in the next few weeks.

If I posted this in the wrong spot, I apologize. I wasn't sure where to put it.

I'm not sure. I would really like to have a cichlid tank but I am going to have to do a lot of reading before I do anything. And I would like it to be planted - again more reading and LOTS of questions. And I also have to figure out how I am going to move a fully functioning, stocked, 70G tank to make room for the new one.The woman had 2 of them but there is no way I had room for another one in my house. My husband would have killed me if I told him I was getting 2 .

I would just get the other one too, store it in garage

That would make an awesome Discus or Angel tank btw....I am very envious.

An African Cichlid tank would be awesome at that size. Could you imagine all those yellow and blue fish swimming all around grey rocks a few bright green plants for contrast?? *drool*

If I was getting overtime again instead of partial unemployment, I would do that. But the funds just aren't there right now.

Discus are gorgeous but scary . I have angels in my community tank. I have always liked cichlids but never had the room. And I still don't know the difference between African and South American - which is why I am getting books this weekend.

I will probably change my mind a milion times before all is said and done. I can't believe I am so excited over a fish tank .

Silly, cichlids from Africa are called African Cichlids and same goes with South American cichlids

J.K. There is a section here on Fishlore about South American and African Cichlids and google always help instead of buying a book (save money).

Lets just say the cuter the face it has, it's SA LOL South American cichlids include oscars, angels, rams, apistos, discus... I find most SA cichlids to have cute puppy-dog faces

African cichlids mostly consist of the "assorted cichlids" you see at PetSmart. Mostly yellows and blues, and some combination of the two.

Yeah, but when you look at them in the pet store they don't have little "Hi, I'm from Africa" signs on them. and we all know how "helpful" some of our lfs employees are with their information.

Google and online are good for cruising on the couch and in bed, but I want to be able to look at it when I am at work and make notes and write in the margins.

So do I want puppy-dog faces or color - hmmm - think I better do some reading before I end up with a mutant piranha that will crawl out and eat my cats while I'm at work

Seriously, I am going to do a lot of research before I decide anything. This is a really big deal for me. I never in a million years thought I would ever have something like this.

You should do research takingncarenof a larger tank is different than a smaller one. Less to do in some areas, And more in others.

I hate to be a negative nancy (...okay, not really. Part of me enjoys it.) but are you sure the tank doesn't leak or anything? That would really be unfortunate.

You know, my neighbor had a 75 gallon plexiglass octagon tank + stand that was a year old and he offered it to me for free ( before I was in to fishkeeping ) he ended up giving it to goodwill because he couldn't get rid of it. Nothing wrong with it, he just gave up the hobby because of his newborn..... So not every tank "leaks" or is junk - just right timing

When we pick it up we are going to set it out on the deck and fill it with water to make sure it doesn't leak. If need be I can always reseal the edges. Now amazonpassion has me thinking how I could sweet talk my husband into going for the other tank and storing it in the garage. But I don't think that will happen

Sarah - I was sitting and watching Ike and Mike ( that's the BPs names) and thinki.g how cool would it be to have a tank full of them. It would be awesome. I'm never going to get to sleep this afternoon. All I keep doing is imagining all the stuff I could doo with it.

Lol I'd love to get blood parrots love the names by the way lol. I'll just have to wait until I get a bigger house I have had to give up my dream of my 55 gallon although I still have two empty ones to play with not as impressive but they'll still be pretty when they are finished and then I get to redesign Houdinis

I know I would be. I was fascinated with the 2 I saw at my lfs. They were the first ones I had ever seen in person and I must have stood and watched them for a good 5 minutes. Absolutely gorgeous.

According to another thread in this forum the size of an average 150 is 72 1/2 x 18 1/2 x 28 1/2

I'm gonna need a bigger stepladder.

I met the woman who is selling me the tanks because she had an ad on craigslist for heaters. I got the most awesome 300w heaters for $15 each. They are not only completely submersible but you plug the box end into an outlet and there is a big digital display that tells you what the temp is. And it's really easy to set. I looked them up online and they retail for $57 each. And she is such a nice person to boot.

Thanks for the info. I will check it out.

Sarah - I mentioned it to him again. Even told him we could buy it and probably double our money on it if we resold it, but he's not having any part of it. So I'm going to let it lie and just be happy with what I'm getting - for now

Yeah, I will be doing a blog on here once I get it and get started. More good news. The woman sent me an email yesterday and said her husband was hoping I planned on taking the stand also. Here I was worried about what I was going to put it on. Thought I was going to have to do some real sweet-talking to get my husband to build me one. So I am now getting 150G tank, stand, filters, heaters, hood and lights for $70. It just don't get much better unless it's free. Even if the tank leaks I don't have a problem with having to re-seal it.
