New Betta's and Other Stuff

So I went to Petco today to find a female betta that is approximately the same size as Axie is to be able to put her in a sorority. I know all the differing opinions on a female betta sorority, but I would like to try to give it a go. Was only going to get a female. So I get there, go over to the betta cups... and..... I about went supernova angry at the store associates. A majority of the bettas are in water so cloudy that you can barely see the fish. Alot of them have fin rot and ammonia poisoning. I was fuming and in tears and just about shouting expletives. I grabbed my favorite store associate who is a cashier and she was shocked at the condition of them. She promised she would change the ones with the worst water, and that she would make sure the fish specialist would change the rest tomorrow. He is leaving in about a week as well, and I'm wondering if I should go to the open interview for his position. What was worst of all, was some <expletive deleted> stacked the overflow betta cups right on top of each other effectively making their air supply limited. My cashier friend was cursing who ever did it under her breath.

I was in tears after I finished telling this to my BF and was trying to figure out how I could get them all and he told me You can't save them all Hasselhoff. He's right but darn, I wish I could. So I brought home another boy, and another 3 way breeder to put him in temporarily. It just about broke my heart.

Anyway, here are the 2 new additions, in their cups.

This is the male, he is a doubletail and a beautiful gold color

He had a nice brown slime on the bottom of his cup.
I also treated him preventatively with about a quarter dose of Pima and Melafix.

This is the girl. She had a lot of particulate in her water, and it smelled Horrid.

She was a light, almost white lavender, at the store. She has since darkened up a lot since being put into the tank an hour ago. She also got preventative treatment with a quarter dose of Pima and Melafix.

Both of these bettas are uber skinny, if you can't tell from the picture. I observed the new girl with Axie for a good thirty minutes. Axie doesn't flare, just rushes (doesn't even nip) at her and then backs off immediately. They will be under intense observation for the next couple of weeks, and Axie and the new girl will be moved to the 20 gallon if they do well to be introduced to Kiara. Kiara is already in the 20 Gallon community and is doing well. She is a bit bigger then these two, but is extremely shy. I think they will do well. Eiros will stay in the divided 10 with Glaedr taking Axie's spot. The golden boy will be released into the 29 if he shows no aggression. OR Glaedr may switch with golden boy if he does show aggression.

I have a plan and a back up plan incase this doesn't work. Hoping the 20 gallon L will be set up in the near future, so I don't have to worry about my boys.

Going to go watch the girls for now.

Oh man... the stress stripes on that girl are terrifying. Good save. Glad to hear at least one person at the store actually cares to some degree.

thanks for saving those two. I feel so bad for them they are so skinny and the water in their cups looks disgusting. That stress stripe is very apparent with the girl. How is she now?
I'm glad the cashier cared and I hope the other employees or at least some will realize that the horrid conditions these bettas have been kept in are not right at all.
Do you have a job already? Maybe you could take the job if you don't and are looking for something to do. Then all the fish will be looked after well and maybe you'll wear off on the other employees.
I hope your new baby's get a healed and fattened up soon. Can't wait to hear and see pictures of their progress...

The girl was put into a makeshift breeder box outta an old betta cup, since Axie beat her up a bit. So she may sit in there for a couple days till she is strong enough to stand up to Axie, and till she shows some fattening. She and the boy seem utterly exhausted. Yes I already have a job, but if petco can offer me the same hours and days off I will probably take the job. If not, then I will probably go and pitch a fit at management about the quality of their bettas.

I went and got another little boy today, who is a golden crowntail. Running outta room. Also got 2 spacious breeder nets, and going to replace the boxes that 2 of the boys are in with those. I put the new Golden CT boy in one of the nets I bought today, and the Lavender Girl in the other. Gonna have to find names for all the new additions. Also, on a side note, got a beautiful Harlequin Sailfin Molly and an awesome Red WendtiI as well.

Sorry for the delay! Been a busy day with work. So here are some updated pics of 3 of my bettas. Sorry, couldn't get the harlequin molly, because he would NOT hold still.

The little Lavender Girl is fattening up nicely, but still has some nipped fins due to a mistake on my part that I should have known better then to do. But she is getting a nice attitude to match Axies, so I think the sorority will work out once she has healed. I think her name is Caoimhe (prounounce Kee-vy)

This is the little Double tail golden boy. He is still super skinny, but noticed some fattening of him today. He would not accept the HikarI Betta Bio Gold, so I tried some Tetra Betta Medley. He likes it, and I noticed he is a VERY dainty eater. Like, he goes to the top and gently eats. Not like the others. Gonna find a name for him.

Here is Glaedr, the one who had his fin nipped. Growing back Nicely. Sorry for the blurriness he wouldn't hold still too long.

And here is the Golden CT boy that I was telling ya about. He is absolutely gorgeous! Gonna find a name for him.

I will look up a Gaelic name for all of them. I think I may name the Golden CT Mannan Mac Lir, god of the sea.

Well the Golden Double Tail passed away. Poor little guy. My water params were 0 ammonina 0 nitrites, and 15-20 nitrates. I guess he was just lost the will to survive and that he was gone before I even rescued him. At least he knew what it was like to be cared for, and to have a nice heated and clean tank before he went though.. I was just starting to get attached to him as well, since he always did a little hello dance when I went up to him. RIP little guy.

Thanks petaddiction I had a hunch that he wasn't going to make it, due to his skinniness but like I said, at least he was well loved.

So there is another rescue in my home and this time I am prepared with pic. Be warned the little guys fins are really tattered, and the pic that makes him look gold is due to the lighting he was under. He is a very very pale lavender, and he is an Elephant ear betta with what looks to be butterfly coloring. Thinking his tail type is a super delta, or a halfmoon, or very possibly a crowntail. Will have to wait and see when he heals up to be sure. But here he is!

Most definitely. I think he will be bred with the little lavender girl, once they are all healed.

Also... I'm starting to think I spoil my fish.

Because the new EE boy looked so tattered, I finally bought some frozen bloodworms. Just because I was worried about him. *sigh* My fish sometimes get better food then I do lol.

They are. But sometimes they seem ungrateful. Save for the 2 CT boys, the rest of my bettas snubbed the frozen bloodworms. Gave me a look like I was crazy for trying to feed them something other then the pellets. LOL. But the ones that were rescued are glad to be outta the cups of death, although till tanks get set up they are in breeder nets. Doesn't seem to dampen their moods though. The only one who has a whole five gallons with out any other fish is Eiros. I think he would grow legs and make me pay if I put him in one of the nets though. Boy has got some attitude at times.

Eiros sounds like my old betta. He would flare until I fed him lol.

Lol Eiros doesn't flare he just does a really angry looking dance. On a good note, I bought some frozen mysis shrimp today, and it is a hit amongst all the fish!
