New Betta Severe Fin Rot! Rescued!

So if you didn't know I've been rescuing bettas lately and I saw a Betta at Walmart on December 28,2016. Here's the photo of him then:

I went back yesterday after begging my dad (my mom took some major persuading lol) to take me to him. So the poor boy got a home on January 2, 2017. They did change his water but shoved him in the back. He's in a 3 gallon tank heated and filtered (filter is off though due to treatment!) and is very tired due to all the changes yesterday. When I gave him some frozen baby brine he didn't even realize they were food which broke me heart. Here's a picture of him yesterday:

Now today despite being shy he's moving around more and exploring his tank (he had slight barely visible stress types because he's never had so much space and has no idea what to do). Treatment started today (using bettafix) and naming will be done today as well! I will be updating on him if you'd like and I'd love tips on how to make him comfortable as can be! Anyways here's my 4th Betta who was rescued!

Picture of him this morning, he's a CT (crown tail) male! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

Congratulations on your new betta. However I would like you to consider rescuing secondhand bettas in future. By buying fish that don't look well you only make room for more fish to be brought into the store. They still made their money and so they bring in more supply to meet the demand. I won't buy any more bettas, I only take them on from people who can't/don't care for them

I'll keep that and mind and do that next time! Thank you though!

Yeah, this is one reason I don't buy Bettas from Walmart (or my local Petsmart either). I have another pet store here, a Pet Supplies Plus, and their fish always at least look healthy.

The Walmart fish are always half dead, or actually dead.

When Petsmart came in some years back I did buy from them... But I had to return dead fish, twice. After the second Betta died on me I told them I just wanted my money back. I haven't bought a living thing from that store since. Maybe it was where the store was new, but.. I dunno. :/

------------------------------

But yeah, don't support them by buying the fish. If they give it to you free of charge (due to poor care, illness) then at least they are not making money off poor fish care.

Yea, it probably would've been better for me to talk to someone to get him free of charge and I realize now I supported their poor fish care. I feel bad about that! The Walmart where I live is pretty crappy and most of the employees are rude so I didn't want to reason with them lol. From now on I'll keep this in mind!

But in reality Walmart / pet shops will bring more betta's in either way—buy them or don't they're still there—so I think it's great you're giving these sick betta's a chance at a longer life.

I noticed with my male betta's when I brought them home they were nervous being in their new home and would hide, to help this cover the tank in black (or dark colors) paper / blanket / shirt and wrap it around the tank. The darkness eases their stress. For my rose petal boy he had to be kept covered longer — while my little betta baby female she didn't care or need it at all. Every fish is different.

You also said he didn't notice brine was food? That could depend on what his breeders fed him and the store. My rose petal won't touch pellets only flakes. My double tail half moon won't touch flakes or shrimp bits ONLY pellets. And my little baby well ... she eats anything and everything that drops in her tank. So try a selection of food, give him some options. Hopefully he starts feeling better soon!

Thanks so much for the support and the advice! He is super skittish so I will try covering his tank in dark paper to reduce his stress and offer him a variety of foods. I did give him blood worms last night which he ate half of them and he doesn't like HikarI pellets so I may try flake food and other pellet brands. Anyways thanks so much!

They'll stop bringing them in if people stop buying them and there's no market

That is true so I`ve decided I`ll rescue bettas that people can`t care for any longer! I do feel bad I supported the business so I`ll also be looking into what my old lfs has for their bettas (they breed all their fish themselves!) so I`ll be buying my bettas from there until I work up the courage to speak to store managers if I see a fish in critical condition! Lol I would`ve talked and reasoned with a manager if I wasn`t so shy!

Yea that`s true but that`s why I bought this fish because the fin rot was almost to his body and I wanted to give him a shot at a good life, but I will not shop there for fish anymore!

Alright quick question if someone with more experience than me can answer! Would adding some salt to his tank and epsom salt baths maybe every 2 weeks help, I heard it helps some where!

I`ve been really upset about it but about a week ago RysukI (that was his name) passed away. I don`t know what happened since he was fine when I woke up and when I got home but when I was about to go back to sleep he had passed. I buried him in our flower garden with a headstone (ok so I got super emotional because I hate when I lose pets and I do this all the time when any one of my animals passes and the "headstones" are just pretty rocks). He was well taken care of for the last month of his life (how long I owned him) and I just wish I could have saved him! Anyways SIP to my little Rysuki. <3

Oh I'm so sorry!

I think it was very kind of you to try to save him. At least he had great care the last bit of his life.

(This is why I don't personally buy a sick fish though, it's too hard to loose them that fast. At least it is for me.)

Best of luck if you to try to get a new Betta to love!

Sorry to hear about Rysuki, but you gave him the best month of his life, so don't be too sad.

Hope you find another Betta to love soon.

Bettafix is a natural medication and even though it may have helped a bit, other medicines would help a lot more. In the future if you ever get another, keep that in mind. RIP little guy️

Yea, I did switch him over to tetracycline which was working but he didn`t make it. Thank you but I will keep that in mind!
