New Betta Question

My buddy is here tonight. He doesn’t see any abnormal redness. Keep doing the water changes. Feed what it will eat. Careful with the dry foods. I presoak the pellets in a little tank water. Occasional daphnia or peeled green pea cut very fine for a baby. If you look at the pic you took after his first meal, you’ll see he’s looking a little too full. Bettas are really easy to see if they’ve eaten too much. Watch him. When he looks like he’s starting to look full, he’s full. I’m thinking boy too. Your fault. Lol.

thanks! so water changes every day? every other day? 25%? 50%? I'll only give him 2 worms next time! and I'll soak the dry foods too! thank you so much!

Truly no problem. Forgive my worn out brain, if your tank has a cycled filter, 25-30% every 4 days is my schedule. Most folks do once a week. I’ll tell you why I do every 4 days, cause I know there’ll be times when I can’t do it on the due date. So if it takes me a day or two, I’m still ok.
And because of all you guys getting new bettas, my hubby found the perfect one for me. Luckily it’s online and not local!

it's not cycled, just a little tank I picked up from walmart for the time being, Lol. I actually am really hating it right now, it's so loud!!! looking for a new one for sure. I guess with not cycled I'll do every day? and good plan! and also, no matter what it takes, GET THE BETTA! haha, they are so cute and worth it! besides... who doesn't love a good little nano betta tank, or maybe a 10g, if that's your style! haha, all jokes aside, what did he look like? i'm always curious about people's dream bettas!

Ok. Here’s the picture. It sounds so spider-like. Had to have hubby describe him over and over!

I want one of those SOOooOooOOOooo bad! Lol. I also saw a little metallic blue/purple crowntail female recently I wanted really badly, but alas I don't have the space.

haha! I always love your replies! it still has about 4 brothers or sister back at the storeeee I am actually am pretty bad.... I bought him a 3 gallon new "quarantine" tank hehe.. it's a halfmoon (halfmoon? I think that's what it is?) tetra tank. I was feed up with the 1g, the lights and filter were broken, so I always had an air stone going and it's oddly shaped too. it was time for an upgrade!

after getting the him and the new tank, I went home, got the new tank cleaned, but first I had to do a little rearranging.. I moved my community tank into the office, Mist's (aka Mystery) future home into the stand the community was one, moved my 5 gallon betta tank to where the divided tank was, andddd behold. the desk was cleared for Mist! After that, I filled up his new tank, and let him float for about 20/30 minutes, until his baggie water tested the same as the tank (about 79 from the tap). then I let him free! he went into his lil cave, so I decided to leave him alone and go fill up the tanks I had drained about 75% to move. it was treat time for the other betta, so I unthawed some extra bloodworms for mist, it was long shot to see if he would eat, but he did! I got my lil tongs and stuck it outside his cave, he came shooting out! he ate about 3 small worms, I was so surprised! he is now running around like a crazy man! he's so adorable and full of energy. I will link to a video of him, and here are some pictures!

haha! i'm so excited! I think I can see an egg spot on all of them. turns out Mist does not remember them. I put them in a breeder box after acclimating, and he was flaring like crazy! so he went into the 1 gallon for now, lol.
here are my beautiful girls!

stormy; she follows around cloudy!

cloudy; she's the wild one! she's got gorgeous pectoral fins, reminds me of a dumbo!

none of them have ventral fins, I asked the lady when they were going to separate them, since I thought it was from aggression, turns out the guy who surrendered them breeds bettas for fun, and these were the imperfect ones. why would you do that? and these guys are perfect in my view!

nope! he's in the 1 gallon until these girls go into the 10g, I had mist in a breeder box to see if he recognized them, but I guess he didn't, flaring away. there are now 2 more girls so now we have Sunny, Cloudy, Stormy, Rainy, and Blizzard! And Mr.Mist of course!

Oh my. It’s like the world is trying to make me get another betta. No, heart, no!

Sounds positively beautiful! If it were mine, I’d keep the water clean and warm (you have a heater in your qt, right?). Super clean water is the best medicine. Since it will be in qt, I’d just watch very closely. If you run into any problems, then we’ll help with meds. I don’t like to use anything (other than aquarium salt) as a preventative because they’ve already been stressed. Do keep us posted. Please? With loads of pictures! I want to hear what it looks like free swimming in qt! So, please hurry. But acclimate slowly.
There’s a betta waiting for you, Gypsy. I’d love to send it to you...

Beautiful!

Pictures?!

of course!!! Blizzard is kinda shy, like Sunny. and Rainy is always in the front with Cloudy!
Rainy has little pink dots on her head, like raindrops! and Blizzard is all white, with a metallic glaze! I only had the chance to snap soon pictures when they were in the bredder box, I added some more plants so it's kinda hard to single one out to get a pic!
here's blizzard

SO happy I was able to find these guys! I was planning on getting fancy imported bettas, but then I realized how much happier I am with bettas I get to raise, and to know I rescued them!

Omg so cute!!

I had my vet look at Petco on his way out of town. I’d really love one like this. He said there wasn’t a healthy one in the lot. Water was dirty. He got the manager over there and waited to make sure they were cleaning and labeling the ones with ich and velvet to be treated. He took three to take home and treat. Velvet. The worst ones cause they were going to “toss” them.

it's really sad, that's what the petsmart near me is like. that's why I always go to petco, or at least the one near me, since it's the cleanest, it might even be more clean than my lfs. you can tell the people here actually know what they are doing! i'm glad he was able to stop by and save at least three, though I hope they just gave them to him. maybe one day the pet industry will have educated people in their stores.

That's awful. I applaud everyone who's able to lecture pet store employees enough that they're able to a) make a difference, b) send a message and c) get the fish for free to nurture back to health. I'm too shy and not firm enough to be heard that well. I hope the bettas are doing well

Being a vet helps a lot. And he’s incredibly caring and compassionate. The worst velvet one isn’t responding well. He’s started giving it injections. Hoping for the best.

Wow, I've never heard of a fish getting injections. Although I'm not happy the fish has to endure that, I'm at least glad medicine for pets is advanced enough that injections are a possibility. I get really frustrated with how subpar medical care is for pets when compared to people.

I’m not all that impressed with human medical care either. Lol. But Vets have been injecting and operating on fish for ages. Just not cost effective for most of us.

I like to tell myself that once I become an adult, I'll invest in things like insurance for my pets. About to graduate college and still haven't hit that milestone lol

And he’s doing much better! Ate some daphnia this morning! All three doing well. The baby will be adopted by his sister. She lost her betta just before Christmas to old age. He will be keeping the other two. Gives him 22 in all.
