In such a small tank, changing the water every two weeks, and doing a 50% wc isn’t the best. It would be better to do a 25% wc every week.

Well with her since I got her about a week ago technically she hasn’t had a water change yet but for the future I’ll do them more often. Also, should I disinfect the whole tank like the sponge filter and everything or just leave it be

Sounds like this betta was too far gone when you got it.
It was lethargic and just got worse :( poor thing

PlantedCommunityTank132 The info given didn't make sense.

If the OP had the betta a week, it could have had water changes every two weeks.
Unless I'm misunderstanding something.:emoji_shrug:

Please don't answer an emergency template with incorrect info.
I'm sure plantedcommunitytanks would have given a different answer had they of known

Sorry about the betta :/

Yeah. Just sounds like she was in poor condition to start with. A sudden change of environment/water conditions could’ve likely exacerbated whatever was wrong with her, sorry for your loss

Should I completely disinfect the tank just in case and start over or not

I don’t really know if that’s necessary, but I also don’t know what the protocols are for prepping a tank for reuse after a sick fish occupied it. Someone else more knowledgeable than me would probably know :)

Hey,

So sorry about your betta girl!! :(

If you are worried, you can start over with the tank. The other option is to keep it going for a while.

If you want to keep the tank going for a few weeks with no fish, then this is what I would do. Add fish food to keep the cycle going as needed. Then, after time has passed, I would do a deep clean - change a good 98% of the water, wipe down the glass on the inside, and do a very good deep vac of the substrate and wipe down any decor. I say a few weeks in case she had some form of parasite that you didn't know about. After a few weeks with no host (if there were parasites), then the adults should be dead along with any unhatched eggs. Since the bb doesn't live in the water, you will be ok with changing that amount.

Again, so sorry!!!!
