New betta mummy with pics

I am the new mummy to a beautiful blue betta named Sam I Am. He has had a few traumatic weeks (as have we!) but hopefully things are improving. We have a 130 litre planted tank (running about 2 months)that started off with 4 zebra danio's. The LFS didn't tell us a betta shouldn't live with them so they lived together for a while. We don't know if it was the danio's nipping, the tank filter (Sam loved playing in the bubbles) or something sharp we had in the tank (possibly a plant or the bogwood). We isolated him in a one gallon breeding tank floating in the big one (for temperature reasons).

This was fine (although I am sure he was a bit sulky about losing his freedom) until a few days ago when our big tank suddenly developed a crack. The water started pouring out, we managed to save all the fishies (which by then also included Spec the Plec and four brand new leopard cories). We now have all the fish (including isolated Sam I am) in a temporary tank on our lounge table while we try to get new glass so we can repair the main tank (which fits in a specially made cabinet). What a week!

I think his fins are okay, they seem pretty well shredded but no new damage so I doubt he was biting himself. I truly think he was catching them on something. What do you think? I am not seeing any recognisable fin rot on them either. He is very active, flares at the corys as they wander past, but doesn't recognise himself in the mirror, strange boy! He is also an avid bubble nest builder.

He had his first bloodworms the other day and sucked them up like noodles - it was so cute! He totally refuses to eat flakes but will grudgingly eat Tetramin. It is hard to only feed him his eyeball's worth!

We carefully watch the parameters of the water. We were using strips but recently brought the liquid tests as they were half priced! I will try to talk hubby into testing the water today to get an up to date reading. our ph usually sits around 7, we have soft unchlorinated water - basically spring water.

Anyway long winded story! I know I will have loads of questions, being a brand new betta mummy and fan. I have included some pics we took of him last night. He must have thought it was a bad lightening storm LOL

Thanks for having me!

Welcome to Fish Lore.
Sam's a beautiful boy. I'm partial to the blues. lol
Sorry to hear about your tank trouble and hope things get better soon.
Glad you moved Sam away from the other fish, I'd hate to think of someone nipping his beautiful finnage.
Perhaps you'll get him a 5 gallon tank of his own so he has more room that the breeder allows.

Enjoy the forum

Thanks Lucy. I think it is one gallon but I am not sure. All I know is it is square - I will go measure it LOL

It's about 9 inch by 9 inch and is 7 inches high - any ideas?

*edited* according to the calculator on here it is 2.5 US gallons

That's a pretty big breeder box

For his nipped fins, just keep his water pristine to prevent infection. You can add a drop of garlic juice to his water to help his immune system and a little extra stress coat, he should be fine

Yeah my hubby used to breed goldfish and made his own tanks. So this is a homemade job LOL

We have some garlic in the pantry. I will use some for dinner tonight and will pop a drop in for him.

Thanks!

Thanks Shawnie!

So how often and what % would you water change the 2.5 gallon floating tank that the betta is in?

HI and welcome to fishlore .. I have my betta in a 5 Gallon, with filter and heater, and yet I do partial water changes every 5 days. In a 2.5 I think I would be doing a 25 % water change every 4 days..imo. That's a great looking betta the Sam I am, lol and 'spec the plec', I love it...

Okay thanks, that is a great help.

I have a habit of naming my fishes. The danios are The Danio Brothers - although I think they are all female now LOL, and the hyperactive leopard corys are as yet unnamed....

I do love Spec's name though - it just works

Galileo is cute!

Sam says hI to everyone and thanks you all for the compliments. I am sure he blushed, and he definitely blew a fishy kiss!

Any ideas on what to use to clean the gunk out of his temp tank? We looked for a turkey baster in the shops but no one has them! Our gravel cleaner is way too big and powerful.

I bet you could find a turkey baster at any grocery store in the "gadget" isle like with the measuring cups, etc....

Nope none at any of the supermarkets at all. They all say they only stock them around Christmas *sigh*

Hubby used a thin piece of tubing instead and it seemed to work.

We bought a piece of overpriced glass so he will be repairing the tank this weekend, the fishies and I can't wait! LOL

We have added marbles to his wee tank. He seems to find them fascinating, maybe because they have thin red stripes in them that just happen to look like bloodworms
