I am the new mummy to a beautiful blue betta named Sam I Am. He has had a few traumatic weeks (as have we!) but hopefully things are improving. We have a 130 litre planted tank (running about 2 months)that started off with 4 zebra danio's. The LFS didn't tell us a betta shouldn't live with them so they lived together for a while. We don't know if it was the danio's nipping, the tank filter (Sam loved playing in the bubbles) or something sharp we had in the tank (possibly a plant or the bogwood). We isolated him in a one gallon breeding tank floating in the big one (for temperature reasons).
This was fine (although I am sure he was a bit sulky about losing his freedom) until a few days ago when our big tank suddenly developed a crack. The water started pouring out, we managed to save all the fishies (which by then also included Spec the Plec and four brand new leopard cories). We now have all the fish (including isolated Sam I am) in a temporary tank on our lounge table while we try to get new glass so we can repair the main tank (which fits in a specially made cabinet). What a week!
I think his fins are okay, they seem pretty well shredded but no new damage so I doubt he was biting himself. I truly think he was catching them on something. What do you think? I am not seeing any recognisable fin rot on them either. He is very active, flares at the corys as they wander past, but doesn't recognise himself in the mirror, strange boy! He is also an avid bubble nest builder.
He had his first bloodworms the other day and sucked them up like noodles - it was so cute! He totally refuses to eat flakes but will grudgingly eat Tetramin. It is hard to only feed him his eyeball's worth!
We carefully watch the parameters of the water. We were using strips but recently brought the liquid tests as they were half priced! I will try to talk hubby into testing the water today to get an up to date reading. our ph usually sits around 7, we have soft unchlorinated water - basically spring water.
Anyway long winded story! I know I will have loads of questions, being a brand new betta mummy and fan. I have included some pics we took of him last night. He must have thought it was a bad lightening storm LOL
Thanks for having me!
