Hello all. My tank has had a white frosted background for awhile now which I like. But I came across some black window film on sale for ten dollars and decided what the heck. I peeled off the frosted film and just put on the black film. It literally took 2 minutes to do, which is why window film backgrounds are the way to go. You can put them on and take them off as many times as you want. With the black background I immediately have noticed colors standing out much more. The black definitely makes the CO2 bubbles stand out more too which is why the photo looks a little grainy. It's just the CO2 micro bubbles. So I'm curious which one you all like better? Black or white?

I personally always go for darker backgrounds. They just make all the colors stand out more vividly, especially with bright-colored fish.

I think I agree with you all so far. Everything seems much more vibrant with the black background.

Definitely black - i had one of my tanks up against a white wall and when i eventually moved it and sprayed it black it was the best thing i ever did.

Different scapes suit different coloured backgrounds and in this case I definitely think black is the better choice. Although there isn't a rule that black is better or vise versa, everyone should try both and decide. Nice tank!

I actually have a deep aversion to the color white. I refuse to even own white socks!

I like black for fish but white for a cherry shrimp-only tank. They get lost with a black background. Also, there was originally a black background when the shrimp tank was new. At the time it was near a window and when the angle of sun changed, the temperature increased by 2 degrees (caused a freakout and quick relocation to the other side of the room).

Agreed. I think white or frosted backgrounds probably lend themselves better to Iwagumi scapes or maybe clean Dutch style tanks. Mine is definitely more jungel-y sort.

I prefer black. Not only do the fish show up better, but many fish are less stressed with a dark background and dark gravel.

Its a beautiful tank with either background! But yes, the dark background does show off the colours and somehow gives the impression of more depth.

Black since it makes the tech in the background disappear.

I usually go with the black background but I liked yours with white background. It gave me feeling of diving on a sunny day and felt more like open area. The black made it sure that it is a captured environment and felt a bit claustrophobic.

When changing from black to white background I was worried my fish would appear far paler but tbh they look far better and the white makes the tank feel much bigger too. Fish are comfortable with it as they spawned withing a couple weeks.
Mines a jungle style scape with a path and I think the white background emphasises the depth created by the path

I'm torn. This tank originally had a painted on black backgound which turned out to look like a faded black color. Then I switched to the frosted background and have really liked it. I've noticed with the black background my wood hardscape get's lost, the tank feels smaller, and there's less perception of depth to the tank. On the other hand the plants and fish do seem to stand out more in my case. I'll probably leave it black for a week or so to let myself get used to it then see if I want to go back to the frosted background. Which I'm starting to think I will. Atleast I can swap it back quickly and easily if I change my mind..... A better quality pic of the old background, and a slightly different scape.

I actually usually am all about the black sand and backgrounds, but I also really liked the white in your picture.

But what I love most are your Keyholes!! How many do you have?

Big Keyhole fan! I have 7 in there (55 Gallon). I ordered 5 from an online store almost 3 years ago now and they sent me 7. It's worked out still.

I vote black. If the tank frame and lid were white I’d probably vote white.

I do black on all mine, even a painted black looks better then nothing. really makes the aquarium pop and hides things behind the tank. white background will really show off algale/dirty back glass as well vs helping to hide it.

I think black makes things pop more and gives it more depth. But white keeps it more simple and cleaner looking. So I guess it spends on the look your going for.

I like the more atmospheric look of the frosted.

Black. Always black.
Having said that, I voted white.
