New baby girl in the family

Christine surprised me this morning with the urge to get a young female... she was the one that chose Christen, but I ended up taking care of her full time. So she wanted to get herself another young one to grow like we did Christen.

We were browsing through Super Pet, who is having ridiculously good sales right now because PetSmart bought them, and we picked up a Waterhome 3 aquarium, with filter and light in the hood for a mere $14 (full price is $60) and 3 one-pound bags of gravel (2 blue, 1 black) for $0.75 a bag, and a pink and white plant for $5 (which really makes the blue and black stand out, the tank looks absolutely gorgeous.

On our way home, we passed by PetSmart and had a look at their bettas, she was torn between 3 tiny blue specks and after about 15 minutes came to her decision.

When we got home, I fired up the Waterhome 3 and got it running, gave it a dose of NovAqua+, AmQuel+, Vita-Chem, and Cycle (came with my 21 gallon kit) and got things as hospitable as possible for her, acclimated her for over an hour after letting the tank run for about 5 hours and she's now enjoying her new home.

We still need the heater for it, but right now it's been floating around 78 degrees because it's been so warm lately.

I'm really happy that Christine has joined me and my betta parenting. It's going to be nice having 3 tanks in this little home

We still need a name for her though, any thoughts?

Congrats on the new Betta girl! I wish we had a Super Pet here, I think i'd fill the car with aquariums at those prices.

I'd give her a few days, maybe a week and see what kind of personality she shows before naming her.. but that's just how we like to name ours usually. looking forward to pics of her, she sounds beautiful.

That's what I like to do, too. It's funny, you end up nick-naming the fish until you think of a really good name.. and then, bam, that's the name!!

That's how Poopy became Poopy!

Someone has probably thought of this before.... but Beta CentaurI is the 10th brightest star in the sky. I would call a betta fish Centauri.

you can't.. see the star is bey-tah and the fish is bet-tah.. it just is a violation of all that's natural! lol.. it's a good name, really.

Haha so you mean I've been calling them the wrong thing all this time?? "bet-tah" not "bey-tah"? Leave it to me to screw it up !

I call them bey-tah but that's because I prefer that way even if it is technically incorrect.

lol.. well, we called them "beta" and when we went to the betta show, everyone else was going beh-tah because of the 2 t's. Either way's fine really, I just am required by law to give amanda a hard time.

Yeah we bought like $120 in equipment and supplies yesterday and paid a mere $30 for everything. I bought the 21 gallon and stand for $160, over $300 full price. I'm likely going to get Christen one of those 3 gallons, they turn out real nice.

The little girl is terribly shy and hides in her plant most of the day but I've sneaked into the room and she didn't notice me, she seems active enough when nobody is around. Seems very scared of us though when we're in the room. Hopefully that goes away when she realizes she's our baby.

yea, I understand how you feel, but hope you'll get another female. our have been the healthiest of the Bettas and the smartest, although they're all smart and cute. we love them all equally, but little Angel's my special baby. Tanzie is a cute name - what made you think of that name?

Ok, now you all have me totally confused and it does not take a lot to do that these days. Bet-tah, Bey-tah, Be-tah, Ba-tah .... OMG. My mind is in a spin and now I don't even know what the thread is about.... Oh yes, the new little girl.

Well we do love babies, no matter what they are called and I do love the names. Now I know why I started to insist that we address them by their names. It just makes it so much easier. They need a name so we don't have to mess with the above nonsense. Besides their names do say something about them and what they are like. For some reason, your little girl reminds me of a very sweet little thing and she will probably always be a little sweetheart, your little shrinking violet.

Welcome to her and we hope you enjoy her and she learns to love her new home.

WOW!

here I was feeling smug that I gt a $50 tank kit for $31. *sigh* that sort of takes the fun out of me sneaking back for another one.

Violet is a cute name for her, I'm going to have to pass that onto Christine for the final review, lol. She loves her little girl though... I think she's finally understanding why I love my betta's so much.

We've saved a lot of money shopping at Super Pet, but we've been unable to go back recently so I'm hoping they still have the 3 gallon tanks kicking around. It sucks that we're losing a Canadian company but that's the way business goes, being a PetSmart pretty much ensures the jobs will be there in the years to come. I need to get back there to pick up some cheap plants. I was considering live plants, but right now I'd almost rather have silk. Maybe in time I'll have a mixture of silk and live.

Stacy wants to get that movie since she likes Hilary Duff. It's in our Netflix queue.

asinity - I vote for silk.. we had miserable luck with live plants and the Tetra silk plants that DFS sells have gone over great with our bettas. Our special needs Betta Teddy Bear especially loves his silk plants and they're just right for him to lie & rest on.

I ended up with silk, the platies in the tank just love them - and I couldn't say no to $1 plants. They've made the 21 gallon look fantastic, although I could definitely go for a few more but Christine says I have enough already. I say, the more the better. Unfortunately Super Pet is all but picked over now, I might find something more, but I doubt it.

Our little girl still doesn't have a name, Christine just can't decide. She started with a little fin rot, she always seems to have stress stripes though so I'm guessing that was the problem. The water parameters are fine and it's warm and filtered, but I think the filter is what causes her stress outs. After turning off the filter she's looking good.

grab every silk plant you can.. you could always use them for the next tank.

how's your little betta doing now? do you put vitachem in her tank daily?

Yeah her and Christen get their daily vita-chem shot daily, usually with their breakfast.

She's doing well now, the little tears have healed up since I shut the filter off. She's less stressed without the current - right now I've got nothing to slow the filter exhaust, so this is the only way I can go. But all in all she's looking very good, realized she's got a brown head like Kyler has. I miss that little guy
