New baby betta boy!

Finally got my betta, he is a gorgeous red with a bit of greenish on his scales on his side. He is darker in the picture then he really is. I have named him Bruno, he is very spunky. His fins are perfect, not a tiny bit of ripped fin or anything, he is so lively! He was swimming around in his cup at Petsmart, he looked like he was trying to make the best of his small area. In Petsmart they have much bigger cups then petco, and they are always healthier, wheras petco ones are usually dead/dying. I attached a pic of my little guy, hes a real cutie.

Nice to meet you, Bruno ;D Congrats on your rescue! Mino is also from Petsmart and he was in great condition, too, when I got him.

Bruno says thanks! He's doing really well, never stops swimming around his tank. I fed him 2 pellets and a peice of pea last night, just in case. He was not bloated or anything. Then I fed him 3 pellets this morning, and he was still begging for more! I am not falling for it though! He eats right from my hand and follows me around. I'm feeding him HikarI Bio gold food. I think this is a good food? I use prime as a water conditiioner, 2 drops for one gallon. Now I need to get him a little female! LOL sometime when I get the fry our of the 10 gal tank! Brianna

Sounds great! HikarI foods are excellent - if you get a chance to buy their daphnia or krill, those make excellent treats for a Betta.

Since we are on the topic of food ... Mino will not eat the pellets I bought him. So, so far - he refuses to touch flakes. And he refuses to touch pellets. The only thing he wille at are the freeze-dried bloodworms. Which he scarfs down! Is this healthy for him? Should I continue to search for a second food he will eat? Or should I stop feeding him bloodworms altogether to get him hungry enough to eat pellets so I can vary his diet?

Hi, I think it is fine to feed them only bloodworms, just be careful not to overfeed. They will beg but you must be strong! It would also help to give them some bits of frozen pea put in the microwave for 50 seconds and peel it, then cut it into pelletsize peices and feed him 2-3 once or twice a week. This is a natural laxative for fish and will help keep everything moving smoothly. If he looks bloated at all he is probably constipated so don't feed him again that day and then feed him only 2-3 peices of pea twice a day until he starts pooping good and is not bloated.

How long have you had your betta? What kind of pellets are you feeding them? The HikarI smells really fishy so I think that's why my betta likes them alot. I took them out of that horrible cardboard contraption the come in and put them in a baggie so they stay fresh. Do you have any pictures of your betta Uprightandlocked?

Bruno is eating and pooping good, and is not bloated, so I am not worried about that. It is so relaxing to watch him swim around, he is so graceful. What a gorgeous boy! I want 20 more! I am going to try some more different foods like fruit and different veggies tomorrow. I am going to spoil him rotten! He already has a 10 gal tank to himself, with just some fry in a breeder net. I think I may get a divider sometime later and put a female in too. Brianna

We have 2 bettas that are like that - they'll look at us with a "are you kidding?" look if we try pellets or flakes on them. But both of them will eat daphnia and peas, so we feed them those along with an occasional fruit treat.

Welcome, Bruno. You are a lovely VT. I love red Bettas and they have the reputation of being the most feisty of colors. I really believe that after having had many red ones myself. But I have also had red bettas that have had loving hearts and sweet personalities. We want you to feel at home here because if it was not for you and others like you, there would be no forum and we would have no reason to be here and that is no fun.

Bruno is doing great. We got him 2 ghost shrimp and he looks at them very curiously but has not tried to eat them. We also got a female betta who ahs a white/cream body and purple-red fins. We named her Tweeter and she is in a 29 gallon with balloon mollies and platys and a rubber lip pleco. She looks scared so I really want to move her in her own tank but have to convince my sister to as its her fish. Brianna

Let your sister know that the females are so smart & funny when they have their own tank - she will absolutely not regret putting that little female in her own tank.. I love the females, their reputation of being even smarter and more characteristic than males is true in the 3 we have, plus they're more active.. my 'computer fish' - KairI is swimming around now, looking at me & saying it's time for bed!

Is Bruno still viewing the shrimp as tank mates and not dinner?

Or is he still seeing the food shrimps as potent opponents, and not dinner?

One died, the smaller, stanley. But I don't think Bruno killed him. He always acted a little "loopy" since I got him.
The bigger one, Oscar, is still alive. I will get Oscar another shrimp buddy tho next time at PetSmart. Brianna

poor stanley. are you sure the tank is where they won't see seafood commercials on tv? he might have seen a shrimp deal commercial and couldn't take it.

Thank goodness Red Lobster got rid of all you can eat shrimp! You surely would have lost both of your little guys if that commercial came on!

Hmm ... I'm hungry.

LOL.. yea, it's cruel to let the fish watch seafood commercials or food network when they're making fish.. or even worse - the fishing shows! !
