Hello iam new to keeping Angles, I have had the black marble Koi for 1 month, I just got the white Koi Angle 5 days ago, both are about 3.5" maybe 4" from nose to tail, they are in the 165gal, they still chase eachother around the tank they don't seem to get along, so I was surprised today to see that the white Koi angle layed a hole bunch of eggs on a pipe in the corner of the tank, so my question is will the eggs hatch or do they have to be fertilized ? are my 2 a pair ? or did she have a boyfriend at the LFS to make her produce eggs? I didn't notice at the LFS if she had a mate there was about 6 of them in the tank at the LFS she didn't seem to have a mate they were all just swimming off on there own x

It appears to me that you may have 2 females. As angel eggs are fertilized externally, during the spawn, without a male I would expect that all the eggs will turn white in 24-hours or less.

If you could post clearer pictures of each angel, it would make it easier to determine sex. Also, check under their bellies. A female will have a tiny, almost rectangular shaped papila while the male's is very tiny, very short and kind of triangular shaped. You will also notice that one of your angels are not so plump now that they've spawned. That would be your female.

You said these angels are about 4 inches, including their tails. That would make the body size around 3 inches. That is about the size angels mature, on the average.

thank you Catsma , Yes the white koi angel is much skinnier, I know she is the one that layed the eggs, she is guarding them like crazy she wount let the other fish go near them, but do you think she had a mate a the LFS or do they just lay eggs at times even without mates? I will try to get better pictures tomorrow, the first picture she is faning the eggs on that pipe. x Plumkin I really like my EBJD one of my fav.

Angels can lay eggs without a male to fertilize them. As she is guarding the eggs and not letting the other angel near, I'd suspect they will all turn white by end of the day. If your other angel was male and had fertilized them, then they both be guarding....at least that is what normally happens. Anything is possible.

You don't actually need both sexes for spawning activity. I've had a male that would fertilize the epoxy in the seams; females spawning with no partner. Even read on this forum where others would have a 3-some spawning. These fish never cease to amaze me.

thanks again Catsma, she is now letting the black angel get close to the eggs I even saw him fanning them, all the eggs around the out side edges did turn white, and the female seems to be picking them off, the main buch of eggs in the middle are still dark in color, But it is good to know about the random spawning activity, still didn't get any better pictures, will keep trying, so I might have babies on the way ops:

If vyou see wrigglers in a couple of days, then you'll know you have a pair.

Good luck!
