New Angelfish to 75g Tank

I have a 75g freshwater tank that is well cycled. I have 1 pictus catfish (going to 1 more, but no stores near me have anymore, he was the only guy left), 4 neon dwarf gouramis (1 male, 3 female) - they’re very peaceful, and I just introduced two young black angelfish. They are about 3-4 months old and have been in the tank for 3 days. I saw them at a store getting attacked since they were in with barbs, so I couldn’t leave them in that environment. PH is about 7.4 but the water is pretty hard. Since introducing them, they are pretty shy and just hang around one area of the tank where I have a large tree for cover. One of them comes right out when I feed them and eats with the other fish, but the other one hangs back and only eats a little. Do you think this is normal behavior for new angelfish? I have some fin repair that I’m putting in the tank to help, but any other suggestions anyone has would be great!

I'd consider it normal behavior for angels to be a bit shy in a new tank. They will assert themselves eventually. Angels are cichlids and can be a bit unpredictable with each other. They don't always pair up with the opposite sex and one can sometimes bully the other, but you have a good sized tank and an opportunity for them to thrive. As always, I'd monitor the pair but this isn't something I'd worry about at the moment. As long as they eat and are growing and one is not picking on the other you're they're ok.

My young angelfish were all very confident from day one, but I don’t think its that unusual for a fish to be shy and not eat at first, especially in your case as the fish had been attacked in the shop, maybe he is still wary of other fish and will probably settle down soon.

Welcome to Fishlore!

You refer to 3 female neon Dwarf Gourami. . . Are you sure they are females? Can you post a picture of them?

I‘m asking because I wonder about the level of aggression in your tank.

I’m sure, I got them from a breeder and they’d been housed together for quite some time prior to me taking them on as a group. They are very peaceful together and don’t bully anyone else or each other, even at feeding times. They’re a sweet little group. I can post pics in the morning!
