New Albino Corys

HI there! I have 3 albino corys in Qt that I got on 1/15/17. They are very active, eating, looking normal. Last night I noticed an ever so slight bulge on the underside of one of them between his front fins. The other 2 seem, well, flatter I guess. I don't know how else to describe it. They move so much and so quick I tried taking pictures but they are blurry, plus it's on his underside. I can't tell if it's just the way his coloring is (since he's albino and kind of iridescent). I know they don't have scales and have more like an armor so I am hoping that it's just the way he is. I know it's hard without a picture I can still try to post a picture but I took about 20 and they just are in constant motion! Thanks.

It sounds like it could be a female, they're larger & chunkier than the males, a clear pic of them may help

Thanks, Coradee. I will try to get a clear picture, but my camera doesn't want to focus cuz they are so active! ha ha. Since they are in qt, I have been scrutinizing them and maybe it is normal. I'm still learning what to look for! The "bulgy-ness" is between his/her "pectoral" (?) fins?

It does sound like a female starting to fill with eggs.

Oh my! I guess I assumed if that were the case it would be bulgy between the pelvic and analfin, not so far up toward her head. See I'm still learning!

Oh I know what you're talking about. Is it white? Under the pelvic and analfin?

No, it kinda seems to be closer to between her "arms" (I guess pectoral fins?) The bulge is slight, but the other 2 seem to be "flatter" on their underside. Yes, it is white-ish. But they have lots of irridescence cuz they are albino and it depends on how the light hits it. They are in QT cuz they are new (I had them almost 2 weeks).

Without a pic it's hard to be certain but females with eggs look just the way you describe, this is one of my duplicareus before she spawned

Yea that's normal. Mine also have a bulge there to. The eggs are usually behind.

Ok I was worried that there was something wrong cuz the other 2 really don't have it. Maybe they are still young. I just want to make sure I am looking for the right things so I don't move them out of QT and cause problems in the main tank!

They are hard to get good pics of as they're either moving or hiding.
It looks quite a healthy normal cory to me

Thanks Coradee. We went to the lfs today and they had 10 left from the batch we got them, it didn't look like any of them had that little bulge. I hope I'm just being a worried fish mommy.

Thanks, Sarah73 the man at the lfs tried to tell me it could be stuck food! On a separate note, I want to make sure I'm feeding them right. Some days I break a cory disk in half and on other days give them 2 shrimp pellets. How long should I leave them in for? I'll feed them in the morning and 8 hours later some is still there, so I take it out.

Welllll my Cories finish 10-20 algae wafers in 2 hours, so I don't need to remove them. Maybe try blood worms once a week. Or even brine shrimp. You should leave them in for 2-3 hours or once they don't go by the pellets.

Wow that's a lot of corys! I have some frozen bloodworms so I'll see if they like them. Thanks to both of you for your help!

Thanks for your patience with me!

Feed the cories at night when the neons are asleep.

Ok I'll try that. But I think they'll wake up when they smell food!

Do I take out what's left in the morning? They never seem to finish.

Yes. Maybe try putting some in right before the lights go out and then wake up the next morning and see if they eat it all

I've found that my angels and turquoise rainbows do an excellent job of keeping the black neons away from the sinking pellets...

Unfortunately, my tank is too small for angels or rainbows (20g high). But thanks though!

I hope you meant that with the same frustrated sarcasm that my first message was filled with - they don't help the poor cories get any food, they eat it themselves! (and I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that I had both angels and rainbows in a 20 hex...20 years ago, sometimes even stupid gets lucky)

Oh! Ha ha I thought you meant it! Tee hee

Ok so I fed the corys last night when I turned the lights out. I fed them a wafer for corys that I broke in half. This morning I didn't see it, but now I am home and I see some of the remaining wafer kind of lodged in a plant. Hard to get to. Do I leave it in? Am I over feeding?

I read the forum archives and so many people say there is no food left when they feed corys but I always have some left. I currently have 3 (more to come to round out their school but I want to add slowly as it is a newer tank) but only split 1 wafer between them. If I do take it out, do I give them a new one tonight? I feel like I am doing something wrong.

Usually when wafers are stuck I move them and my Cories go right after them. Butttttt since you have way less maybe they aren't used to the wafers? Also having 6 or more will help them eat and feel secure

they do seem to like them. It's what they were fed in the store that is why I bought them. They hover around it and nibble at it quite a bit. Then they forage a bit and go right back to it. When I couldn't find a Cory and finally did I know the back I was wondering why he was hanging around there and that's why, the food was there.

Well then just move it, so the Cories can reach the food

Ok it was in there since last night I didn't want it to be "spoiled" or something for them. And I guess I didn't word it well. They can reach it, it's me that can't without removing lights, lid, etc.

What wafers are they? Corys need food that softens quickly as they aren't grazers

I'm not familiar with that food but as it's specifically made for corys it should be soft enough for them, I'd suggest crushing it a bit though before putting it in the tank

I'll try that. I break them in smaller pieces so they don't have to wrangle one piece from each other!
