HI All,

I'm new to the aquarium hobby, I have a 75 gal tank that I have setup for about a month now. The tank currently has 4 sunset honey gourami, one guppy and one golden severum cichlid.

I'm planning to get a rainbow shark (bottom feeder +alge crew) and wanted to get one more cichlid or peacock and a few other fishes. Any suggests??

Hello Mar...

Since you're new to the water keeping hobby, it would be best to keep easy fish. Guppies, Swordtails, Platys, any of the minnows, Rasboras, Danios and even Goldfish. Sharks aren't among the easy fish. They're aggressive and territorial. Save this species for much later, when you've gained some experience keeping the easy fish.

Not sure but think the cichlids is going to make lunch out of the guppy. Tetras are generally easy fish to start with.

I really like Swordtails but my water hardness is too low. At least that is what I have been told. I will wait on getting a rainbow shark. But how long do I need to wait. I don't want to get a different bottom feeder and then get a shark later on as I have been told they wouldn't get along. Also, would a peacock do well with other fishes I currently have???

The cichlid is not bother the guppy yet, so I have some time before it becomes lunch. I hope to relocation the guppy but then. Thanks for the heads up.

Welcome Marvan to the forum.

Since you already have a severum, you may want to look into getting a couple of South American cichlids instead of the Peacock you mentioned.

Something like an electric blue acara, a firemouth cichlid and some type of geophagus would get along with a severum.

These fish I mentioned are usually on the lower end of the aggression scale.

Those plus a small school of boesemanI rainbow fish would be for a very nice looking stocking.

Islandvic Thanks, for you input. I was think of getting a red shoulder severum or a green severum. But the Mrs likes peacock? Just wanted to know if they well get along or not. Since peacock are least aggressive Africa cichlids from what I have read. (Don't quote me on that newbie talking here...hahaha)

Of the African cichlids they are definitely the least aggressive, especial compared to mbuna.

A lot of the Haps have low aggression, but some are nasty also.

When it comes to the Peacocks, just look into it more, to ensure compatibility with the Severums, since those are American cichlids.

Myself, I have not researched African peacock and severum compatible though. I do know that Peacocks don't mix with Mbunas.

I have debated back and forth with peacocks and new world American cichlids for my next tank. I like both, but I think I am leaning toward the central/south American ones.

I am liking those because their colore are as bright, but the fish seem to have more variety of shapes and sizes. To me, theAfrican peacocks start to look all the same, with the only difference is their color pattern.

If you find out that are not compatible, here are some links to a bunch of fish that come front the same side of the world as your severums. They also have good Peacock collections as well !!

Take a look at cichlids and their

Also try collection of American cichlids. Also check them out on YouTube, they have a massive operation in Florida. Huge Peacocks selection also!

These online breeders have a lot of pics and descriptions and will give you an idea of what there is that are from the same place as the severums, and can be more colorful that peacocks as well. There are tons of other sites of course that sell direct on line.

If you look up those sites, take a look at these species, which will more than likely be compatible with your Severums.....

Electric blue Jack dempsey
SalvinI cichlid
Red rainbow cichlids
Firemouth
Geophagus Red head tapajo
Geophagus Winemilleri
Yellow banded acara

Islandvic Thanks for the information. I got a peacock for one day and have to return it. It was too aggressive. Lucky no one was hurt during this experiment. I watch it for 6 hrs and determined it will most likely kill or over stress one of my other smaller fishes. Fish store to it back and all is well. I got a green severum instead.

Quick question for ya'll, my canister filter tubes (which are clear btw, so I can see the inside) are developing white fluffy stuff on the inside. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? Because I know from experience that once the white fluffy material get thicker it will peel off and go inside my canister and then into my tank.

Severums are awesome.

Many times people look past them when choosing how to stock their tank, but they are great when they start putting on size.

How large is the new one and the golden severum you already had?

The golden severum is about 3.5 inches and the green is about 2 inches! I tried to get one that was similar in size. Didn’t want him/her to get picked on.

The least aggressive of most Cichlids do not belong in a community tank. Stick to community tank fish. Rainbowfish , Tetras, Rasbora, Gourami, Cories, Danios just to name a few. Make sure they are temp compatible. Cichlids, peacocks and Haps are not for a beginner. They will make lunch of the smaller Tetras and most likely kill most of the fish you describe or kill them by stressing them out. Read Read Read.

my tanks contains 4 sunset honey gourami, 2 powder blue gourami, 6 silvertip tetra, 2 Severum, 5 yellow mollies and a pleco (only gets 4 inches) and 3 apisto fire red (two male and one female). I return the one guppies I had. So far I haven't had any issue with the severum bothering any of these fishes. But you look like you have lot of experience. Have I set myself up for disaster???
