I wonder how often they'll have this contest. I never even heard of it until it was over.

I nearly wet myself laughing when I read that Egypt's official position, on learning that the Pyramids had been bounced off ' The List' was that the only real wonder on the planet is the Great Pyramids!.. they might as well have said " Ours is way bigger than yours.. haalaa haalaaa".

The one thing that I'm trying to figure out is how Christ the Redeemer got on the list over the pyramids.
Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful statue, but the creation of it isn't as impressive as the creation of the pyramids. It was built in the twentieth century, giving its creators access to relatively modern construction techniques.
It seems to me that the pyramids (or the sphinx) are more on par with the rest of the entries. Other than Christ the Redeemer, I think the youngest of these wonders is Taj Mahal, which I think is around three hundred and seventy years old. (Can't remember exact dates, but I want to say built around 1630).
Not that age should be the only factor, but if we're going to be looking at things built with modern techniques, there are some amazing buildings in Japan and Hong Kong.

the great pyramids are an example of what you can do with practically unlimited numbers of expendable slaves. :;br I figure that a lot of the votes came from that country for the big Christ statue to be on there and yea, it seems a rather odd collection and I always thought that wonders of the world were grouped by eras so a new set should be all relatively new constructs.

I like the thought of era-based wonders.
There are questions about the treatment and expendability of the Egyptian slaves. There is no question that they were slaves, but there is some evidence that they were treated better than we treated blacks after the Emancipation. But then again, there's also evidence to the contrary. Besides, I don't care how many people you have, it's a massive effort in physics to move blocks that large, and to do so over two millenia ago is darn impressive.

Of course, if you go with that logic, all of our progress is cheating, with the :;z help.
We would have no knowledge and no free will to use knowledge had we not stolen it from the Forbidden Fruit. (But then, there's this counter theory of mine that suggests that God had to have known that we would eat the Fruit the moment he forbade it. The MorningStar may have been powerful, but I cannot believe that he would have been able to cloud God's eyes to the truth. Therefore, we were supposed to commit the First Sin. I'm working on an idea for a novel that involves this theory. Hopefully it will come to fruition. )

To get back on topic, sort of:
Ok, so what would the seven modern wonders (late 19th, 20th century) be?
In this case, I would have to agree with Christ the Redeemer. It's such a beautiful statue.
Being odd, I would have to also say Harajuku, not for the buildings, but for the people. It is an awesome sight to witness the clashing ideas of fashion.
The Peace Dome would be a more normal idea. It is a wonder for three reasons: It is a testament to man's ability to survive and thrive in conflict, it is a monument to peace (I hope that Japan will uphold this ideal. They've been talking about rescinding their "no offensive war" policy), and the fact that the building mostly survived the detonation of a nuclear bomb which exploded a mere 150m away makes it an amazing structure in its own right.
The Statue of Liberty
The Eiffel Tower

Actually, they shouldn't have deleted the Pyramids from the list, I personally think it is one of the true wonders of the world along with the Great Wall, Mexican Pyramids and the Taj Mahal. and Slaves didn't build Pyramids, they were payed workers who worked for the Pharaos willingly. just imagine how did Egyptians carried those huge rocks weighing tons and lifted them so high nearly 3000 years ago!!!! which is quite a challenge even for modern engineers. some people even say Aliens built the Pyramids.

I have to say, I have been to Chitzen Itza. It is absolutely amazing. It represents 365 days in the year (4 sides with 91 steps and a temple on the top 91x4+1=365) , and on the spring and fall equinox the sun falls on it to make a snake spiriling down the side to meet the heads on the base. They Myan calendar is the most accurate-- and it only goes to 2012. Weird huh! There is a smaller pyramid inside the big one. you can go inside and see the altar. Being able to go into something that old is just beyond words.

The Egyptian pyramids are on my list of places to go before I die-- along with Petra.

Stonehenge is a strange rock formation which was built thousands of years ago in England. Nobody knows who built them.
