I just picked up my tank yesterday! At the $1 per 1 gallon sale at petco. I also got me a 40 gallon filter with 100w heater and a lid for the tank. All I have to get is some gravel and doctorate it then I will be read to start cycling it! I can't wait.

I am excited. I have a small 5 gallon at home along with a few smaller tanks for the two bettas I have. I just want to make sure I do this tank right I had a hard time at first with my 5 gallon tank.

Well this time I am doing more research so as of right now I am not sure. I did what the pet store said to do the first time which was let the tank run 4-5 days before adding fish. I did that I went 6 days then we added 1 fish he did great so we added a few others they where guppies I lost one so I tested water don't remember what the levels worry but they where off so I took a bag of water to the pet store and they said to do a 25% water change Dailey so I did durning that time we lost our other guppy. My bottom feeder not sure what kind he is is still alive and doing well. Things finally got back to normal so we added three small angle fish and they have been doing great for the last 3 weeks very active and eating great. The new tank is for them. I don't want to have all those problems this time around so I am trying to get more ideas on what to do to prevent any problems

I would do it fishless. when I first started I jumped the gun and only hardy fishes survived. now I got three other tanks 1 I just started cycling 1 yesterday. I don't recommend going for how many days it takes. I think its cycled at no certain time. the best thing I can tell you is get a apI master kit liquid. your ammonia should go up. don't panic and try to treat it let it go. then your nitrite will go up. again don't try and treat it. when your nitrates go up its almost done. keep testing until your ammonia and nitrites go to zero. your tank should be cycled. do as less wa ter changes as possible during this process. cycling is establishing good bacteria. trying to treat high ammonia and nitrites and water changes will make your tank take longer to cycle. Patience is key good luck
