I have a 29 gallon tank, looking to start along 12 gallon. Is there any benefit from using the water from my 29 gallon to start the 12 gallon? My thought is to use some of the water from the 29 gallon after a few days of doing a water change. Then check parameters after a week or two before adding stock. Thanks in advance for the help.

I mean, the water will be dechlorinated already, but it will not contain any beneficial bacteria if that's what you are thinking; it will not help with cycling.

Good to know, so I will need to add the bacteria to get the cycle going like I did when I started the 29.Not a problem, in no rush to do wrong.

The one thing you could do is add filter media from your 29, which does hold bacteria already and can kickstart a cycle or instantly cycle depending on how much you add

Another option if you are not in a hurry is throw the new filter in the 29 and let it run for a month or so.

Thanks for the help, may go with the filter media idea.
