Netrite snails

I ordered 6 netrite snails today , 3 for each tank .One of my tanks has some algae on the substrate and a little on the glass but the other tank doesn't have any yet , both tanks have dead leaves from plants , will they eat those or do I need to buy algae wafers ? If so which ones are best for these tiny snails ?

 

My nerites also eat the bio-film on the glass. You can drop in algae wafers as well as some veggies like zucchinI and spinach. Mine seem to like those the best.

 

My nerites do not eat green algae ( or maybe they do and thus the reason I don't have any ) but they love the diatoms.
As far as dead plant matter, I have heard some will eat it but mine do not. I have about 50 + Nerites in my tank and have never seem any eating the dead plants.

You should think about supplementing their diet with fresh veggies ( mine love zucchini, carrots, minI pumpkins and other squash ) as much as possible to make sure they are getting enough calcium ( for their shells )
If not the veggies, there are other way to supplement calcium such as a cuttlebone ( like the birds use ) in a media bag in the filter, liquid calcium drops, etc

 

I like the veggies for them , do you just slice and give raw ? Just lay in the bottom of the tank ? I have never had snails .

 

I always give raw veggies. You can stick the zucchinI slice on a stainless steel fork and lay it on the bottom. There are also veggie clips you can buy. For spinach, I'll tie it around a small piece of rock with a rubber band. Carrots just sink by themselves and so do unsalted canned green beans.

 

This may sound strangebut my Snails eat leftover fish food. I give them Veggies too but they like the fishfood.
