Neon Tetras All Died At The Same Time

I have a 40 gallon tank. I set it up 3 weeks ago, I have 2 balloon mollies that are doing great. Last week I bought 10 neon tetras, after 3 days they all died out of nowhere. Today I bought 6 rumynose and 10 neon tetras. After 6 hours they all died again at the same time. I used to have neon tetras before and never had this problem. Can anyone tell my why this is happening and why are they all dying at the same time. This makes me never want to buy them again. I had an easier time keeping discus alive.

My ph level is 7.0. Water temp is 76. Ammonia and nitrite 0. I have the aqua clear filter for a 50 gallon tank.

 

So I am guessing you are not cycled. And you should not add that many fish at once... it leads to an ammonia gallon.

Do you know the nitrogen cycle?

 

HI Jolie so you had fish before, do you know about the nitrogen cycle? Discus are really delicate fish and you kept them alive. So you must have some experience with fish keeping.

How are you acclimating your fish? What are all of your water parameters? Ammonia, Nitrite & Nitrates we need to know all of them to see if your tank is cycled or not.

Also have you done any tank maintenance? Water changes? Are you using a dechlorinator and/or bottled bacteria?

Are there other fish that you added that didn't die?

You may also need a bigger filter. For a 40 gallon tank you should have a filter that cycles 400 gallons per hour (gph) the Aquaclear 50 only cycles 200gph. You need to buy a second one or upgrade to a bigger filter. I have a Seachem Tidal 55 on my 29 gallon and it isn't big enough either. So I had to add a second filter. I also added a sponge filter to be sure I had an extra boost and extra bacteria growth.
