Neon Tetra Just....vanished???

Hello all ! Upon getting ready for feeding, me and my boyfriend did a head count and...one of our tetras is just gone? No body. We've looked in, under, around, over, everything. Nothing. And it wasn't even one of the small ones. What happened?? We have, well had, 6 neon tetra, 2 sunset platies, and a very docile elephant ear betta male. They've never shown any sorts of aggressive signs or any sickness. We monitor our readings weekly and change water 25 to 50 percent depending on said readings, weekly.

Maybe he got eaten, or died of other causes and then was eaten. If you're 100% sure that he's nowhere in the tank, that's likely what happened, unless you have no lid and he jumped.

Sorry for your loss it does happen though, when I first started keeping fish, and I kept a little community tank in a 13 gallon, I decided to introduce a guppy in with my mollies… they ate him… unless yours is just really good at hiding (I would even check in the filter, it's not unheard of for them to wind up in there) he would've had to have gone somewhere, so either eaten or he jumped. Don't feel bad though, there's a good chance he died of natural causes if there were no signs of aggression or disease, meaning his death was likely pretty painless and peaceful.

Things don't just disappear but they can be hard to find. A body would take a while to rot or be eaten but a skeleton would be left. I'd check your ammonia level as a dead fish will tend to elevate the level.

My mollies ate most of a guppy in a day, and I guess whatever little bits of it were left got sucked into the filter. It's possible that her other fish were eating at it, and because neon tetras are so tiny, the rest of it could've gotten sucked up, but I agree, I'm thinking it's probably hidden somewhere in there.
